Early Feminist Features and the Behavioral Contrast between Jo and Beth March in Alcott´s Little Women

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je představit a ukázat na příkladech pozici žen ve společnosti 19. století v Americe, která následně vedla k založení první vlny feminismu. Práce také pojednává o představitelkách první vlny feminismu a jejich literatuře. Jako příklad byla vybrána kniha Malé ženy od feministky Louisy May Alcottové, ve které jsou analyzované rané feministické prvky a osobnostní kontrast mezi dvěma hlavními postavami. Alcottová napsal Malé ženy za účelem upozornit na alarmující společenské normy, které potlačují ženský charakter a základní ženská práva. Cílem analytické části je v knize ukázat přítomnost represe, ženského podřízení a vyobrazení tradičních mužských a ženských rolí. Alcottová zahrnula tyto feministické prvky, aby vyvolala diskuzi a uvědomění žen, které by měly společně bojovat za změnu, podobně jako se snažila bojovat Alcottová společně s feministickým hnutím. V kapitole 4. 2 Rozdíly v chování Jo a Beth March, Alcottová nechala záměrně zemřít Beth, aby demonstrovala na konkrétní postavě, co se stane se ženou, která přijme svou submisivitu a rodinný život bez boje za změnu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to introduce and show examples of the position of women in the 19th century America which led to the establishment of the first-wave feminism. It deals with the first-wave feminist representatives and their literature. As an example Little Women by a feminist Louisa May Alcott is chosen where early feminist features and behavioral contrast between the two main characters are examined. Alcott wrote the Little Women to draw attention towards alarming social norms which were subduing women's character and suppressing basic women's rights. The analytical part shows the presence of repression of women, feminine submission and depiction of traditional gender roles in the novel. Alcott incorporated those features to provoke a discussion and realization for women that they should stand out and fight for a change as she was trying to fight together with the feminist movement. In chapter 4. 2 Behavioral Contrast Between Jo and Beth March, Alcott left Beth to die intentionally to demonstrate on a character what is going to happen to a woman who accepts her submission and domesticity without a fight for a different life.
