Evaluation of Superstructural Units of the Czech Forest Ecosystem Classification Based on the National Forest Inventory Data

Abstract:

Lesnicko-typologický klasifikační systém je nástrojem pro diferenciaci lesních stanovišť užívaným od 50. let 20. století. Od 70. let jsou pro rámcové členění užívány nadstavbové jednotky ve výškovém, tj. vertikálním (lesní vegetační stupně) i geografickém, tj. horizontálním smyslu (přírodní lesní oblasti). Nadstavbové jednotky za dobu své existence prodělaly dílčí změny, nicméně doposud nebyly rigorózně vyhodnoceny pomocí v ekologii užívaných metod moderních mnoharozměrných analýz. Zájmovým územím je Česká republika a k analýze byla využita data z pozemního šetření druhého cyklu Národní inventarizace lesů (2011–2015). Vyhodnocení bylo provedeno pomocí aplikace tzv. zonálního konceptu, který je při klasifikaci založen na předpokládaném vlivu makroklimatu jako dominantního faktoru určujícího rozvoj vegetace. Použity byly analytické metody klasifikace, nepřímé ordinace, shlukové, geoprostorové a vegetační analýzy. Výsledkem práce bylo stanovení prahových hodnot významných environmentálních faktorů pro modelaci zonálního stanoviště, lesních vegetačních stupňů a zpřesnění hodnot klimatického indexu (Ellenbergova kvocientu aridity) ve dvou nejvýznamnějších prostorových rámcích zájmového území – Hercyniku a Karpatiku. Parametry faktorů i hodnoty klimatického indexu se vzájemně statisticky výrazně odlišovaly ve srovnání obou prostorových rámců navzájem i vzhledem k celému zájmovému území. Mezi tyto faktory určující zonální stanoviště patří sklon svahu, výška svahu, Negative Openness, Multi-resolution Index of Valley Bottom Flatness, Terrain Surface Texture, půdní typ a subtyp. Rozdíly v lesních vegetačních stupních určuje kombinace nadmořské výšky, průměrné roční teploty, průměrného ročního úhrnu srážek a intenzity difuzního záření. K hlavním edifikátorům závislým na makroklimatu a určujícím charakter lesních společenstev patří – dub zimní (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.), buk lesní (Fagus sylvatica L.) a smrk ztepilý (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.). Dílčím výsledkem je také detailní popis konceptu přírodních lesních oblastí, možnosti jeho dalšího rozvoje a uplatnění v souvislosti s klimatickou změnou. Závěry práce by měly výrazně přispět k rozvoji stávajícího v lesnické praxi užívaného lesnicko-typologického klasifikačního systému.

Abstract:

The Czech Forest Ecosystem Classification is a forest site differentiation tool which has been used in the forest management practice from the 1950s. Since the 1970s, these superstructural units have been employed in altitudinal (or vertical; Forest Vegetation Zones) and geographical (or horizontal; Natural Forest Areas) zonation. Throughout their existence, these units have undergone partial revisions; however, a rigorous reevaluation using methods of modern ecological multidimensional analyses had yet to be carried out. The Czech Republic is the study area of this thesis. The data analysed were obtained from the robust and objective Czech National Forest Inventory database, second cycle (2011–2015). The evaluation was conducted by applying the so-called zonal concept, which is based on the hypothesis that macroclimate is the dominant factor in the evolution and succession of vegetation. Analytical classification methods, indirect ordination, clustering and geospatial and vegetation analyses were used. As a result, threshold values of significant environmental factors were established in order to create a model of a zonal site and Forest Vegetation Zones, as well as to refine the climatic index (Ellenberg Quotient) values in the study area’s two most prominent spatial units, the Hercynicum and the Carpaticum. The parameters of these factors differed significantly for both the study area as a whole and for the two frames, respectively. Factors determining a zonal site include slope incline, slope height, Negative Openness, Multi-resolution Index of Valley Bottom Flatness, Terrain Surface Texture, and soil type. Differences in individual Forest Vegetation Zones result from the differences in altitude, average annual temperature, average annual precipitation, and diffuse radiation intensity. The dominant tree edificators, dependant on macroclimate and shaping the character of forest communities, are the sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.), European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.). A detailed description of Natural Forest Areas is another outcome of this thesis, including the proposals for the potential growth of this concept and its applicability in connection with climate change. The outputs of this thesis should provide notable guidance in perfecting the system currently employed in forestry practice.
