The theoretical basis of coaching and psychotherapy - critical comparison

Abstract:

Tento příspěvek srovnává teoretická východiska psychoterapie a koučování za účelem hlubšího porozumění tematice. Prolínající se oblasti obou přístupů jsou hledány a jejich pojetí je porovnáváno. K tomu jsou užita teoretická východiska vybraných směrů obou disciplín a relevantní výzkumy. Během srovnání jsou nalezeny četné podobnosti ve způsobu práce, předmětu zájmu i principech. Pozornost je věnována faktorům, které působí v procesu změny klienta, přičemž je poukázáno na společné prvky obou přístupů. Psychoterapeutický i koučovací vztah je pojímán jako klíčový element procesu a aspekty obou pojetí jsou srovnávány. Nalézáme mnohá společná východiska. Koučování z psychologických zdrojů také částečně vychází a inspiruje se u psychoterapie i ve výzkumném směru, nachází se ovšem v rozdílném stádiu výzkumu. Vymezení koučování se ukazuje jako obtížné a v jeho praxi předpokládáme eticky problematické oblasti.

Abstract:

This paper compares the theoretical basis of psychotherapy and couching for a deeper understanding of the topic. Intersecting areas of both fields are sought and their concepts are compared. For this purpose, the theoretical basis of selected directions of both disciplines are used, as well as relevant research. A substantial number of similarities between coaching and psychotherapy are recognized in terms of their focus, principles and methods. Attention is paid to the factors acting in the process of changing the client and their common elements are pointed out. Therapeutic and coaching relationship is recognized as a key factor for both approaches and its aspects are further examined. The distinction between coaching and psychotherapy is considered problematic and even though this paper finds many similarities between them in the theoretical basis, their research appears to be in different stages. Coaching is also partly based on psychological knowledge and research. Some ethical issues in coaching practice are supposed.
