Toxic masculinity in partner relationships

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je zaměřena na zkoumání toxické maskulinity v kontextu partnerských vztahů. Teoretická část je rozdělena do tří kapitol. První kapitola se věnuje rozdílům mezi pohlavím a genderem a vysvětlení souvisejících pojmů. Druhá kapitola se zaměřuje na pojem maskulinity a její formy. Třetí kapitola představuje koncept toxické maskulinity a její možné projevy v každodenním životě. Praktická část se zabývá tematickou analýzou dat získaných prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s vysokoškolskými studenty a studentkami. Na základě transkripce a následné analýzy rozhovorů bylo identifikováno osm témat. Výsledky tematické analýzy ukázaly, že projevy toxické maskulinity se nejčastěji projevují skrze společenský tlak na muže, očekávání jejich dominantní role a problematické formy chování, včetně psychické manipulace, agrese či sexuálního obtěžování. Participanti zároveň reflektovali určitou míru proměny tradičních rolí a poukazovali na příklady pozitivní změny směrem k větší flexibilitě a rovnosti ve vztazích. Na závěr se ukázalo, že genderové stereotypy přetrvávají i v univerzitním prostředí, což může mít vliv na formování postojů mladých lidí k rolím mužů a žen.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the exploration of toxic masculinity in the context of partner relationships. The theoretical part is divided into three chapters. The first chapter focuses on the differences between sex and gender and explains the related concepts. The second chapter focuses on the concept of masculinity and its forms. The third chapter introduces the concept of toxic masculinity and its possible manifestations in everyday life. The practical part deals with the thematic analysis of data collected through semi-structured interviews with male and female university students. Based on the transcription and subsequent analysis of the interviews, eight themes were identified. The results of the thematic analysis showed that manifestations of toxic masculinity are most often expressed through social pressure on men, expectations of their dominance and problematic forms of behaviour, including psychological manipulation, aggression or sexual harassment. At the same time, participants reflected on some degree of change in traditional roles and pointed to examples of positive change towards greater flexibility and equality in relationships. In conclusion, it appeared that gender stereotypes persist in the university environment, which may have an impact on the formation of young people's attitudes towards gender roles.
