Conservation of the pleistocene bison horn

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá konzervací a restaurováním osteologického materiálu. Cílem je zkonzervování fosilního rohu pravěkého bizona určeného k výstavě. Celý proces spočívá ve zpevnění jeho povrchu, a tím zpomalení degradace. Teoretická část pojednává o kostech, jejich složení a následné degradaci. Shrnuje co konzervace osteologických předmětů obnáší, jaké máme další možnosti a v jakých podmínkách by měly být exponáty uloženy. Experimentální část se zabývá posouzením míry penetrace konsolidačního roztoku do kosti při aplikaci za normálního a za sníženého tlaku. Důležitou součástí práce je konzervátorská zpráva.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with conservation and restoration of osteological material. The aim was to preserve the fossil horn of a prehistoric bison which should be displayed on an exhibition. The whole process of conservation consists of strengthening its surface and thus slowing down the degradation. Theoretical part focuses mainly on bones, their composition and subsequent degradation. It describes conservation procedure of osteologic objects, what are other options of materials or methods to use and in which conditions should be objects stored. The experimental part focuses on the degree of penetration of consolidants into the bone when applied with regular or low pressure. An important part of the thesis is also a conservation report.
