Self-regulation mechanisms of substance use among clients of low-threshold facilities for children and young people

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá zkoumáním seberegulačních mechanismů užívání návykových látek u rizikových mladých dospělých. Cílem této práce je zjistit, jaké seberegulační mechanismy tito lidé používají a co je k regulování užívání motivuje. Data pro zodpovězení těchto otázek byla sbírána pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s devíti klienty nízkoprahových zařízení pro děti a mládež a následně vyhodnocena metodou tematické analýzy. Na základě analýzy bylo zjištěno, že respondenti mají nastavená pravidla, která vymezují, za jakých podmínek může být návyková látka zakoupena a užita. Pravidla uvedená respondenty se týkala nákupu návykové látky; času, místa a společnosti při užití; množství a způsobu užití. Snaha zaměstnat se se ukázala jako další nástroj regulování užívání. Současnou motivací k regulování užívání jsou pro mladé uživatele obavy ze stigmatizace a pozorování negativních dopadů užívání na sobě, na vztazích s blízkými, ale i na ostatních uživatelích. Očekávanou motivací v budoucnu je pak nalezení zaměstnání, partnerský vztah či rodičovství. Jako zásadní respondenti popsali individualitu motivace, rozhodnutí regulovat užívání i způsobu regulace.

Abstract:

This paper examines the self-regulatory mechanisms of substance use in at-risk young adults. The aim of this thesis is to describe self-regulatory mechanisms, that these individuals use and what motivates them to regulate their substance use. Data to answer these questions were collected using semi-structured interviews with nine clients of low-threshold centers for children and youth and then evaluated using a thematic analysis method. Based on the analysis, it was found that respondents have set rules that define under what conditions an addictive substance can be purchased and used. The rules stated by the respondents were related to the purchase of the addictive substance; the time and place of use; company when using; the quantity and method of use. Efforts to keep themselves busy then emerged as another self-regulatory mechanism. Concerns about stigma and the perceived negative effects of use on themselves, on relationships with loved ones, and on other users, are current motivations for regulating substance use. The expected motivation in the future is to find employment, a partner relationship or parenthood. Respondents described the individuality of motivation, the decision to regulate using and the method of regulation as crucial.
