The Last Members of the Luxembourg Dynasty Between the Czech Lands and Italy: Studies, Sources, and Analyses

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na fenomén poslední generace lucemburské dynastie, který nahlíží primárně primazmatem italských pramenů. Na základě známých i neznámých listin, korespondence a dalších pramenů uložených v bohatých italských archivech se autor pokouší přinést nový pohled na lucemburské panovníky — bratry Václava IV. († 1419), českého a římského krále, a Zikmunda († 1437), uherského, římského a českého krále a později římského císaře, a jejich bratrance, moravská markrabata Jošta († 1411) a Prokopa († 1405) — a jejich aktivity v pěti případových studiích. První analyzuje příčiny a okolnosti úmrtí královny Johany Bavorské, první manželky Václava IV. Druhá stať zkoumá zajímavý list italského diplomata Cristofora de Valle, který obsahuje některé nové informace o situaci na pražském dvoře a v lucemburské dynastii v roce 1390. Další studie se zabývá druhým zajetím krále Václava jeho bratrem Zikmundem a zamýšlí se nad jejich úmysly. V centru pozornosti čtvrté části jsou struktury vlády a politický personál krále Zikmunda ve východním Benátsku, získaném během války proti Benátkám v 10. letech 15. století. Poslední esej se věnuje pozoruhodné reflexi husitských Čech, jak ji roku 1436 zaznamenal Simone da Crema, mantovský vyslanec k císaři Zikmundovi. Zatímco některé studie spíše potvrzují tradiční pohledy a stereotypy, jiné staví poslední generaci Lucemburků do poněkud jiného světla.

Abstract:

This thesis approaches the phenomenon of the last generation of the Luxembourg dynasty, seen principaly through the Italian sources. Based on mostly overlooked charters, correspondence and other records stored in rich archives of Italy, the author attempts to shed new light on the Luxembourg princes — brothers Wenceslas († 1419), king of Bohemia and of the Romans, and Sigismund († 1437), king of Hungary, of the Romans, of Bohemia, and later Roman emperor, and their cousins Jobst († 1411) and Prokop († 1405), margraves of Moravia — and their activities in five case studies. The first one analyses the cause of death of Queen Johanna of Bavaria († 1386), first wife to King Wenceslas. The second essay takes a look at an interesting letter by the Italian diplomat Cristoforo de Valle, offering some new insight into the situation at the Prague court and in the Luxembourg dynasty in 1390. The third study reconsiders Wenceslas’s second captivity orchestrated by his brother Sigismund and their intentions. The government structure and political personnel of King Sigismund in the eastern Veneto, acquired during his campaign against Venice in the 1410s, are in the center of the fourth article. The last essay is dedicated to a particular reflection of Hussite Bohemia by a Mantuan ambassador to Emperor Sigismund in 1436. While some of the case studies rather confirm the traditional views and stereotypes about the last generation of the Luxembourgs, others put these princes in a different light.
