Gender in Humanitarian Discourse

Abstract:

Tato dizertační práce zkoumá uplatňování jazykových preferencí ambasadorů v humanitárním diskurzu. Pomocí textové analýzy a na základě teorie genderových rozdílů v jazyce byly vzorce opakujících se rétorických prostředků (kódy) klasifikovány jako typicky mužská a typicky ženská rétorika. Následnou dvoucestnou ANOVOU byl zkoumán vliv nezávislých proměnných, gender a profesionální status, na volbu jazykových prostředků jednotlivých skupin - muži politici, muži celebrity, ženy političky, ženy celebrity. Signifikantní rozdíly byly zjištěny v užívání typicky ženské rétoriky, jakožto varianty typické pro doménu humanitárního diskurzu. Dále se jako kategorie se signifikantními rozdíly projevily tyto: typicky mužský projev morálky (pomsta, spravedlnost, hledání viníka), typicky ženská rétorika v oblasti činnosti (zvyšování povědomí, prevence), typicky mužská rétorika moci (nadvláda, vyhrožování, sliby, kritika, sarkasmus) a kategorie typicky ženské rétoriky moci (moc skupiny, posilování moci ostatních, humor). Výsledky ukázaly, že humanitární diskurz je oblastí, ve které je typicky ženská rétorika, vycházející z teoretického rámce genderových jazykových rozdílů, upřednostňovanou variantou před rétorikou mužskou typickou pro politický diskurz. Vzhledem k zjištění, že při vzájemném působení faktorů gender a profesionální status mluvčí vykazují signifikantní rozdíly v jazykových preferencích, práce podporuje stanovisko, že gender nelze zkoumat v izolaci jako jedinou proměnnou. Je nutné jej zkoumat v součinnosti s ostatními faktory ovlivňujícími identitu mluvčího a její jazykové projevy.

Abstract:

This doctoral dissertation examines the use of language preferences of good-will ambassadors whilst delivering humanitarian speeches. Adopting the theory of gender differences in language, repetitive rhetorical patterns (codes) were detected; using textual analysis they were classified as manifestations of typically male and typically female rhetoric. Subsequently, the two-way ANOVA method analysed the effect of two independent variables, gender and professional status, on the choice of language means in the sample groups - male politicians, male celebrities, female politicians, female celebrities. Significant differences were detected in the overall use of typically female rhetoric, as a language variation typical for the domain of humanitarian discourse. Furthermore, the following categories also manifested significant differences: typically male rhetoric in the category of morality (revenge, justice, search for the perpetrator), typically female rhetoric in the category of action (raising awareness, prevention), typically male manifestation of power (power over, threats, promises, criticism, sarcasm), and typically female rhetoric in the category of power (power to/with/within, humour). The results have shown that humanitarian discourse is an area in which typically female rhetoric is the preferred language variation to male rhetoric which is typical for political discourse. The dissertation further supports the view that gender cannot be examined in isolation, as a single variable. This claim is based on the findings that when analysing gender concurrently with another independent variable - professional status, the speakers manifested significant differences in their language preferences. Therefore, gender is to be analysed with other associated factors influencing the identity of the speaker.
