McEwan's Atonement: The power of fiction

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is dealing with the novel Atonement by Ian McEwan, one of the most important recent British authors. The novel is interpreted as a postmodern piece with the use of all characteristic features and procedures typical for this course appearing in the novel. This thesis concerns on one of the main motifs - on the role of reality and fiction in the novel and what power fiction can have, elements which give the novel its power and impressiveness. This thesis also tries to answer what McEwan is trying to show the reader through the main character of the novel, Briony Tallis.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá románem Pokání (Atonement) z pera jednoho z nejvýznamnějších britských spisovatelů současnosti, Iana McEwana. Román je zde interpretován jako postmoderní dílo, tedy s využitím všech charakteristických prvků a postupů, které k tomuto směru patří a které se v románu objevují. Pozornost je v této práci soustředěna na jeden z hlavních motivů - roli reality a fikce, a také na to, co románu dodává na síle a na působivosti - jakou sílu může fikce mít. Tato práce se také pokouší zodpovědět otázku, co se McEwan snaží prostřednictvím své hlavní postavy, Briony Tallis, čtenářům ukázat.
