Alternative theories of the firm

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje alternativním teoriím firmy a jejich odlišnostem oproti tradičnímu neoklasickému přístupu maximalizace zisku. Vrací se jak k prvopočátkům ve vnímání firmy v rámci společnosti, tak k vývoji teoretických konceptů firmy a zároveň k různým pohledům na zisk, respektive princip satisfakce. V práci je také osvětlen důvod, jenž vedl ke vzniku alternativních teorií v podobě oddělení vlastnictví od kontroly, které bylo jedním z nejdůležitějších předpokladů těchto modelů. Zvlaštní pozornost je věnována především manažerským teoriím, jejich teoretickému základu a také formálnímu vyjádření jednotlivých modelů. Součástí těchto modelů je i jejich grafické vyjádření včetně aplikace. Závěr teoretické části pojednává o behaviorálních modelech a jejich předních představitelích. Tato kapitola je členěna od nejstarší teorie po tu nejmladší včetně nejdůležitějších myšlenek jednotlivých děl. Praktický okruh je věnován sociální odpovědnosti firmy. Po krátkém úvodu následuje stručný popis analyzované společnosti, tedy ExxonMobil Corporation. Stěžejní část této diplomové práce pak pojednává o přístupu zmíněné firmy ke svým zaměstnancům, svému okolnímu prostředí, ale také k ekonomickému růstu oblastí, v nichž operuje.

Abstract:

This thesis is focusing on alternative theories of the firm and their distinctions to the traditional neoclassical theory of profit maximization. It goes back to perception of the firm in the society and to development of theoretical concepts of the firm, as well as to different points of view of profit or satisfaction principle. You will learn more about the reason which triggered the beginnings of alternative theories of the firm like separation of ownership and control, which was one of the most important assumptions of these theories. Special attention is paid to the most prominent managerial theories, their theoretical assumptions and mathematical expressions. The graphical representations and real life applications of these theories are also included. The remaining theoretical part talks about behavioral theories and their leading representatives. This chapter is sorted from the oldest theory to the youngest one including the most impressive ideas of each. The practical part is dedicated to corporate social responsibility. The short introduction is followed by a description of examined firm, Exxon Mobil Corporation. The fundamental section of this thesis deals with approach of the previously mentioned corporation to its employees, environment and also to the economic development of impacted parts of areas where it operates.
