Which processes drive fine-scale spatial variability of forest herb layer?

Abstract:

Výskyt druhu na určitém místě lze v zásadě interpretovat dvěma způsoby. Buď se zde nachází díky příznivým podmínkám, nebo se sem dostal náhodou. Tato dvě tvrzení ve zkratce shrnují to, pro co se v odborné literatuře vžily termíny niche assembly a dispersal (neutral) assembly. Význam disperze může být větší pro druhy s širší realizovanou nikou (generalisty), které zřejmě díky snadnému šíření a velké produkci diaspor nacházíme i na místech, kde by se vzhledem ke svým stanovištním preferencím běžně nevykytovaly. Mým cílem bylo odhadnout význam proměnných prostředí a prostorových vztahů ve čtyřech vybraných typech lesa třídy Querco-Fagetea v okolí Brna, a to na třech škálách a s přihlédnutím k počtu generalistů a specialistů. Jednotlivé typy jsem srovnala z hlediska beta diverzity a distance decay, k samotnému odhadu vlivu prostoru a stanoviště jsem použila jednoduché a parciální Mantelovy testy. Význam konkrétních faktorů prostředí jsem určila pomocí post hoc regrese s ordinačními osami. Ukázalo se, že na všech škálách byl důležitější vliv prostoru, více na jemné (10–30 m) a velké škále (500–20000 m). Nejméně odpovídalo na vzájemnou vzdálenost bylinné patro dubohabřin, nejvíce acidofilních doubrav. To bylo ve shodě s předpokladem o roli generalistů a specialistů – u dubohabřin převládali specialisté, u acidofilních doubrav generalisté. Vzhledem k použité definici dispersal assembly ale tento výsledek nelze zcela jednoduše interpetovat. Prostředí se významněji uplatňovalo pouze u dvou vegetačních typů, šípákových doubrav a především suťových lesů. Konkrétně bylo v šípákové doubravě na malé škále nejdůležitější pH, na střední (30–500 m) potenciální osluněnost, v suťovém lese na malé škále pH a pokryvnost kamenů a na střední škále množství záření propouštěného korunovým zápojem a kombinace sklonu svahu a expozice.

Abstract:

Trying to account for an occurance of species at the site, one can relate it to habitat conditions, or to chance. This two straightforward explanations represent two possible approaches to community assembly, the niche perspective and the neutral (dispersal) perspective. Dispersal may be of a great importance for species with broader realized niche, i.e. habitat generalists. Such species, due to high dispersal capacity and seed production, will perhaps not strictly obey environmental determinism, colonizing also unfavourable habitat patches. The objective of this study was to assess the importance of environmental variables and space on understory forest herbs, respective to proportion of habitat generalists and specialists. Four vegetation types belonging to Querco-Fagetea class in the surroundings of Brno, Czech Republic, were evaluated varying the extent and grain size of sampling. Beta diversity and distance decay rates among the vegetation types and scales were compared. To estimate the role of habitat and space, both simple and partial Mantel tests were performed. Important environmental variables were determined using post hoc regression with ordination axes. At all scales, correlations between species dissimilarity matrices and geographic distance matrices proved to be stronger than those between species dissimilarity and environmental dissimilarity. The space dominated within the finest scale (10–30 m) and the regional scale (500–2000 m). Being consistent with the former assumption, the vegetation type most influenced by spatial variation was acidophilous oak forest, having the greatest proportion of generalists. The least influenced type was oak-hornbeam forest dominated by specialists. However, this cannot be interpreted without equivocation. The role of environment was decisive only for thermophilous oak forests and especially for ravine forests. At the fine scale in thermophilous oak forest, the most important variable was pH, at the mesoscale (30–50 m) it was potential irradiance. In the ravine forest the fine scale variation in species composition was determined by pH and rock cover, the mesoscale by the amount of transmitted light and the combination of aspect and slope.
