The qualitative aspects of population aging in the European Union countries

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na kvalitativní aspekty stárnutí populace zemí Evropské unie. Demografické stárnutí je v současnosti ve středu zájmu všech vyspělých zemí a často označováno za demografickou katastrofu. To je způsobeno tím, že společnost stárnutí posuzuje z nárůstu naděje dožití, ale měla by se spíše zaměřit na kvalitu přibývajících let. Dimenzi kvality je vhodné demonstrovat pomocí souhrnných ukazatelů zdravotního stavu, proto jsou tyto ukazatele v práci popsány a analyzovány. Cílem práce je zhodnocení vývoje struktury obyvatelstva do roku 2080 dle projekce Eurostatu, porovnání naděje dožití a délky života ve zdraví a potvrzení či vyvrácení hypotézy o teorii komprese morbidity pro všechny členské státy Evropské unie. Práce je také zaměřena na komparaci členských zemí Evropské unie podle ukazatelů naděje dožití v daném zdravotním stavu a v závěru práce dojde ke zhodnocení stárnutí populace v kontextu důchodového věku a nalezení spojitostí mezi členskými státy s využitím shlukové analýzy.

Abstract:

This master thesis focuses on the qualitative aspects of population aging in the European Union countries. Demographic aging is currently a topic of high interest in all developed countries and is often referred to as a demographic catastrophe. This is caused by looking only at the increasing life expectancy but should be assessed also while considering the quality of life in the old age. The dimension of quality is demonstrated through various indices of health, such as summary measures of population health. These are described and analyzed in some chapters of this masters thesis. The aim of this research is to assess the development of the population structure and to test the hypothesis about the theory of compression of morbidity in all the European Union countries. Furthermore, these countries are also compared by their performance in Health state expectancies. This thesis concludes with an evaluation of the relationship between the population aging and the age of retirement and the finding of connections in the European Union countries via cluster analysis.
