Map Key of Base Maps of the Czech Republic: Evaluation of the Current State and Proposal of Solution

Abstract:

Obsahem diplomové práce je analýza současného znakového klíče Základních map České republiky z produkce Českého úřadu zeměměřického a katastrálního. Práce se v první části zabývá vysvětlením základních pojmů, jako jsou kartografická sémiologie, kartografické vyjadřovací prostředky apod. Dále je popsána historie ČÚZK a její přínos pro českou kartografickou tvorbu, kde jsou v centru hlavní pozornosti Základní mapy ČR a čtenář je s nimi podrobněji obeznámen, protože jsou hlavním předmětem práce. V prostřední části textu je provedena komparace znakového klíče ČÚZK s dalšími českými znakovými klíči včetně toho, který používá ve svých mapách Ministerstvo obrany. Dále je také vyobrazena další podrobná komparace znakového klíče ČÚZK, tentokrát se znakovými klíči z různých evropských zemí. Tyto komparace a autorovy zkušenosti následně slouží jako inspirace pro celkové zhodnocení v následující kapitole, kde autor práce navrhuje nové znaky nebo úpravy stávajících znaků. Navrhované změny jsou dále podrobeny dotazníkovému šetření, které je popsáno v šesté kapitole. Práce slouží jako možná inspirace pro ČÚZK při budoucí aktualizaci znako-vého klíče pro ZM ČR a pro jiné čtenáře jako náhled do tvorby map, mapové tvorby úřadu porovnání mapových znaků s jinými znaky z Česka i zahraničí.

Abstract:

The purpose of the thesis is the analysis of the current character key of the Base Maps of the Czech Republic produced by the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre. In the first part, the basic terms, such as semiology of cartography and cartographic visual expressions, are explained. There is also a description of the history of the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre and the benefit it has on the Czech cartography. Being given that the thesis focuses mainly on the base maps of the Czech Republic, they are described in more details. The middle part of the text provides a comparison between the map key used by the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre and other Czech map keys, including the one used by the Ministry of Defence. Furthermore, the map key of the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre is compared with another ones from different european countries. These comparisons combined with the author's own experience, serve as inspiration for a proposal of news signs and improvements of the existing signs. These are presented in the next chapter. The questionnaire construction, described in chapter 6, examine the suggested changes. Should the map key of the base maps be updated in the future, the thesis might serve as an inspiration for the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre. It could be considered as an insight into the creation of maps and the comparison between the Czech and foreign map signs by other readers.
