Attitudes of Czech society to voluntary childlessness

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zjistit postoje české společnosti vůči dobrovolné bezdětnosti a srovnat tyto postoje v rámci dvou zkoumaných let 1999 a 2008. Práce rozebírá stále více diskutované téma nízké plodnosti a odkládání rodičovství, tedy prodlužování období bezdětnosti, mezi mladými lidmi. První část práce představuje teoretické ukotvení zkoumané problematiky. Popisuje dobrovolnou bezdětnost v souvislosti s genderovým uspořádáním a hodnotou dítěte v naší společnosti. Nastiňuje historický vývoj bezdětnosti skrze teorii demografické tranzice, přičemž jsou zmíněny také teorie individualizace a kulturní změny, racionální volby a genderové rovnosti. Tyto teorie slouží k popsání důvodů, které spojují autoři s poklesem plodnosti a s dalšími demografickými změnami, které v České republice nastaly po roce 1989. Druhá část práce využívá mezinárodního komparativního šetření EVS 1999 a 2008 k srovnání míry tolerance společnosti vůči dobrovolné bezdětnosti. Zaměřuje se na postoje české společnosti, ale nabízí také srovnání v rámci evropských zemí. Práce zjišťuje postoje vůči dobrovolné bezdětnosti z hlediska vybraných socio – demografických ukazatelů a analyzuje, zda je mezi zkoumanými proměnnými vztah.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to identify attitudes of the Czech society towards voluntary childlessness and to compare these attitudes within two studied years – 1999 and 2008. The thesis examines the ncreasingly debated issue of low fertility and postponing parenthood (prolonging the period of childlessness) among young people. The first part of the thesis introduces theoretical point of surveying the issue. It describes voluntary childlessness in connection with the gender arrangement and the value of the child in our society. It outlines the historical development of childlessness through the theory of demographic transitition. It also uses theories of individualization and social change, rational change and gender equality to describe reasons, which are connected with increase of childlessness in the Czech Republic since 1989. The second part of the thesis uses international comparative survey EVS 1999 and 2008 to compare the level of tolerance towards voluntary childlessness in term of both international and especially in the Czech society. This thesis finds attitudes toward voluntary childlessness in term sof selected social – demographic indicators and analyzes whether the relationship between studied variables exists.
