Corporate Social Reporting within Companies in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Předmětem této diplomové práce je reportování o společenské odpovědnosti a udržitelném rozvoji u podniků v České republice. V úvodní části práce je vymezen koncept společenské odpovědnosti, je uvedena její historie a vývoj v České republice i různých částech světa. Práce se zabývá stakeholdery, jejich rozčleněním i jejich důležitostí pro podniky. Nedílnou součástí konceptu je tzv. triple bottom line - ekonomická, environmentální a společenská oblast. Velká pozornost je věnována argumentům pro a proti konceptu a je vysvětleno, proč by se měl podnik chovat společensky odpovědně. Práce objasňuje i rozdíl mezi udržitelností a společenskou odpovědností. Měření a reportování o společenské odpovědnosti je nejdříve popsáno v teoretické rovině a dále prakticky rozvíjeno na základě výzkumů KPMG, které uvádějí úroveň výkaznictví v 250 největších podnicích světa i ve 4 100 největších podnicích různých států. Nástroje reportingu o společenské odpovědnosti a udržitelnosti jsou v praktické části analyzovány u 50 nejvýznamnějších podniků České republiky. Nejdůležitější částí diplomové práce je komparace 31 českých a 23 anglických zpráv vydávaných podnikatelskými subjekty dle hodnotících kritérií založených na směrnicích Global Reporting Initiative. Na základě této komparace jsou navržena doporučení pro tvůrce zpráv, aby zvýšili kvalitu vydávaných reportů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with corporate social responsibility and sustainable reporting by the Czech Republic’s companies. The opening section defines the social responsibility concept and introduces its history and development in both the Czech Republic and different parts of the world. The thesis also addresses stakeholders, their segmentation and importance for companies. The so-called triple bottom line encompassing economic, environmental and social spheres is an integral part of the concept. Great importance is devoted to the pros and cons of the concept, and it is explained why companies should behave in a responsible manner. The thesis clarifies the difference between sustainability and social responsibility. Social responsibility measurement and reporting is first described from a theoretical viewpoint and further developed in practice based on KPMG surveys, which present the reporting levels of 250 largest companies in the world as well as 4 100 largest companies from various states. In the practical part, social responsibility and sustainability reporting tools are analyzed in the 50 most important Czech companies. The most crucial part of the diploma thesis depicts a comparison of 31 Czech and 23 English reports published by business entities in accordance with the evaluation criteria chosen based on the Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines. The recommendations for report creators in order to increase the quality of issued reports are put forward based on this comparison.
