The language of electronic communication

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je prozkoumat využití a formu počítačové komunikace (CMC) mezi anglicky mluvícími uživateli. Práce nejprve vysvětluje rozdíly mezi mluvenou a psanou formou jazyka, dále podrobně zkoumá především oblast psaného jazyka a jeho využití v CMC. Následně popisuje typické rysy obou typů komunikace - asynchronní - tj. e-mailové a textové zprávy a synchronní komunikace - tj. webový chat a instant messaging. Práce se také zaměřuje na strategie, jako jsou syntaktické a lexikální redukce pro zkrácení času a místa ve zprávě, využití emotikonů a zkratek. Teoretická část popisuje charakteristické lingvistické rysy a přináší analýzu textů jak formálních tak i neformálních struktur v CMC. Praktická část dále obsahuje dotazník, který zkoumá preference uživatelů CMC. Texty zahrnují zkratky, použití interpunkce a použití ne-abecedních grafických prostředků (např. emotikony, hvězdičky, velká písmena).

Abstract:

The purpose of the present bachelor thesis is to investigate the use and forms of computer mediated communication (CMC) among English speakers. Initially, the thesis explains differences between spoken and written form of the language. It closely explores mainly the area of written language and how it is used in CMC. Consequently, it describes typical features of both, asynchronous modes - i.e. email and text messaging, and synchronous modes - i.e. web chat and instant messaging. The thesis also aims on the strategies such as syntactical and lexical reductions to reduce time and space, the use of emoticons, acronyms and short messages. The characteristic linguistic features have been described in the theoretical part and investigated in the empirical part of the work using the research method which explores and compares the use of formal and informal structures in the CMC. The practical part includes a questionnaire which researches preferences of CMC users, from which the conclusion is drawn. Texts in the practical analysis, i.e. email, web chat, instant messaging and SMS are enclosed to explain the linguistic and syntactic features. The texts include abbreviations, use of punctuation and use of non-alphabetical graphical means (emoticons, asterisks, capitalization).
