"Czech Netflix": specifics of local content and user preferences in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá strategii lokalizace streamovací platformy Netflix v České republice s důrazem na charakteristiku lokálního obsahu a preference uživatelů. Teoretická část se zaměřuje na srovnávací analýzu lokalizace v západní a východní Evropě. Tato analýza slouží jako argument k tomu, že Netflix zanedbával lokalizaci své služby ve východních zemích. Tyto země, včetně České republiky, mají omezenou pozici a čelí velkým výzvám. Srovnáním západní a východní Evropy lze lépe porozumět rozdílům v lokalizační strategii a také tomu, jak Netflix přistupuje k podpoře a transparentnosti domácích filmů a seriálů na své platformě ve východní Evropě. Následuje podrobnější analýza českého trhu, kde je zkoumán obsah, dabing, titulky a typy české domácí produkce, které Netflix nabízí českým uživatelům. V praktické části se práce zaměřuje na rozhovory s uživateli a snaží se zjistit jejich preference a názory na český a zahraniční obsah v katalogu. Práce si klade za cíl identifikovat klíčové výzvy a problémy spojené s lokalizací na českém trhu a poskytnout pohled na vývoj streamovací služby, s důrazem na specifika českého kulturního kontextu.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the localization strategy of the streaming platform Netflix in the Czech Republic, with a focus on the characteristics of local content and user preferences. The theoretical part centres on a comparative analysis of localization in Western and Eastern Europe. This analysis serves as an argument that Netflix neglected the localization of its service in Eastern European countries. These countries, including the Czech Republic, have a limited position and face significant challenges. By comparing Western and Eastern Europe, one can better understand the differences in localization strategy and how the platform approaches support and transparency of domestic films and series on its platform in Eastern Europe. This is followed by a more detailed analysis of the Czech market, examining content, dubbing, subtitles, and types of Czech domestic production offered to Czech users by Netflix. The practical part focuses on interviews with users, aiming to identify their preferences and opinions on Czech and foreign content in the catalogue. The thesis aims to identify key challenges and problems associated with localization in the Czech market and provide insight into the development of the streaming service, with an emphasis on the specifics of the Czech cultural context.
