Political-Geographical Consequences of the Spanish-American War (1898)

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje politicko-geografickým důsledkům španělsko-americké války. Válka proběhla mezi Spojenými státy americkými a Španělskem v roce 1898. Díky tomuto konfliktu Spojené státy získaly své historicky první kolonie - Kubu, Guam, Portoriko a Filipíny, cílem práce proto je definovat rozdílný přístup Spojených států vůči těmto nově nabytým územím. Válka také změnila směr americké zahraniční politiky. Spojené státy se až do konce 19. století řídily politikou izolacionismu, nicméně po skončení války a s nástupem Theodora Roosevelta začaly postupně měnit svou politiku v politiku expanzionistickou. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, první část se věnuje americké zahraniční politice do začátku 20. století, druhá část se věnuje konkrétním politicko-geografickým změnám, které proběhly na Kubě, Guamu, Portoriku a Filipínách po předání do americké správy.

Abstract:

The subject of this bachelor thesis are the consequences of the Spanish-American War. The war broke out between the United States and Spanish in 1898. Thanks to this conflict the United States gained its first-ever colony - Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico and Philippines.The aim of this bachelor thesis is to define differing approach to these newly acquired territories. The war also changed the direction of US foreign policy. By the end of the 19th century, the United States had been guided by the policy of isolationism, but after the end of the war and the arrival of Theodore Roosevelt, they gradually began to change their policy to expansionism. The work is divided into two parts, the first part deals with American foreign policy untill the beginning of the 20th century, the second part deals with the specific political-geographical changes that took place in Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines after passing on to the US administration.
