Occupational prestige of librarians

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá prestiží knihovnické profese především na dvou úrovních. Autor se v úvodní části zabývá teoretickým ukotvením knihoven v informační společnosti. Společnost výrazně mění, což ovlivňuje také relevanci knihoven. Autor vysvětluje, proč a jak by knihovny v informační společnosti nemusely relevanci ztratit, a představuje koncept knihovníka jako informačního pracovníka. V hlavní teoretické části definuje prestiž povolání a nabízí průřez výzkumy sebevnímání knihovníků a vnímání povolání neknihovníky. Představuje indikátory stavu prestiže knihovnictví v Česku, k nimž patří především legislativní ukotvení rozvoje knihovnictví, finanční ohodnocení, kvalifikace, věková a genderová skladba knihovníků. Tyto indikátory mohou být použity při hodnocení prestiže povolání. V empirické části práce nabízí výsledky hloubkového výzkumu. Autor zanalyzoval dvanáct rozhovorů s knihovnicemi s cílem proniknut do sebevnímání českých knihovnic. Výstupem je kauzální model zachycující sebevnímání knihovnic. Čtenář se dozví, jak knihovnice vnímají svůj přínos pro společnost, jak si myslí, že je knihovnictví vnímáno veřejností, nebo co knihovnice považují za kladné a negativní aspekty povolání.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with occupational prestige of librarianship on two main levels. In the first part author looks into theoretical anchoring of libraries in information society. Human society is changing considerably. These changes also greatly affect the relevance of libraries. Author explains, why and how can libraries keep their relevance in information society. He also introduces the concept of librarian as information professional. In the main theoretical part, he defines the occupational prestige and offers an overview of researches connected with self-perceptions of librarians and perceptions of librarianship by non-librarians. Author introduces indicators of occupational prestige of librarians in the Czech Republic. To these indicators belong anchoring of development of librarianship in legislation, height of salaries, qualification and age and gender composition of librarians. These indicators can be used for evaluation of librarianship prestige. In the empirical part of this work can be found results of an in-depth research. Author analysed twelve interviews with librarians. The goal was to gain an insight into self-perception of Czech librarians. The main result is a causal model, which describes how librarians perceive their contribution to society, how they think the general public perceives them and what librarians consider as negative and positive aspects of librarianship.
