Previous relationship experiences as predictors of autonomy rate in romantic relationship in young adulthood

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of former interpersonal relationships experience on the extent to which people feel autonoumous in various activities in current romantic relationship in young adulthood. According to the theoretical foundations and previous empirical findings, were relationship with mother and father, understanding of interparental conflict and former romantic experience, expected as possible predictors of the extent of autonomy in motivation to various activities in current romantic relationship. One hundred and ninety-eight respondents in the age from twenty to thirty years were involved in our study. Relationship with mother and father was measured by ECR-RS (Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationships Structures Questionnaire), understanding of interparental conflict was measured by CPIC (The Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale), former romantic experience was investigated by the personally-designed questionnaire. Depending variable, the extent to which people feel autonoumous in various activities in current romantic relationship, was measured by three selected subscales of MRA Scale (Motivations for Relational Activities scale). By using multiple linear regression it was found that the extent of autonomy in motivation to various activities in current romantic relationship was predicted by quality of relationship with parents. Also former romantic experience, concretely the extent of dealing with a breakup and the extent of commitment in the former romantic relationship, was a significant predictor. Neither the link between understanding of interparental conflict and the extent of autonomy in current romantic relationship, nor gender differences were found.

Abstract:

Cieľom práce bolo preskúmať vplyv minulých vzťahových skúseností na mieru autonómie v motivácii k zapájaniu sa do vzťahových aktivít v súčasnom romantickom vzťahu v mladej dospelosti. Skúmaný bol vplyv vzťahu s matkou a otcom, vlastností rodičovského konfliktu a skúsenosti s minulými romantickými vzťahmi a ich ukončením. Na základe poznatkov z teórii a výskumov týkajúcich sa danej prsa dalo predpokladať, že sa jedná o významné prediktory miery autonómie a kontroly v motivačnej orientácii v partnerských vzťahoch. Výskumu sa zúčastnilo 198 respondentov vo veku 20 až 30 rokov. Pre zistenie miery úzkostnosi a vyhýbavosti vo vzťahu k rodičom bol použitý ECR-RS (Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationships Structures Questionnaire), vnímanie rodičovského konfliktu bolo zisťované pomocou CPIC (The Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale), skúsenosť s minulými romantickými vzťahmi a ich ukončením bola meraná vlastným dotazníkom. Závislá premenná, miera autonómie v motivácii k zapájaniu sa do vzťahových aktivít v súčasnom romantickom vzťahu bola meraná pomocou troch vybraných a preložených subškál MRA Scale (Motivations for Relational Activities scale). Pre analýzu dát bola použitá mnohonásobná lineárna regresia, v ktorej bolo zistené, že na mieru autonómie v motivačnej orientácii v súčasnom partnerskom vzťahu mali popri vzťahu s rodičmi významný vplyv aj skúsenosti s minulých romantických vzťahov, konkrétne miera vyrovnania sa s ukončením bývalého partnerského vzťahu, ktorý jedinec považuje za významný vo svojom živote a miera závazku v tomto vzťahu. Vplyv partnerského vzťahu rodičov na mieru autonómie v motivácii k zapájaniu sa do aktivít v partnerskom vzťahu ich detí, nebol až na výnimku kontroly v motivačnej orientácii k odhaľovaniu pocitov partnerovi potvrdený. Ani pohlavie sa ako významný prediktor neprejavilo, čo bolo s veľkou pravdepodobnosťou spôsobené malým rozsahom výskumnej vzorky, jej homogenitou a nepomerom zastúpenia mužov a žien medzi respondentmi.
