Translation: Creativity Despite Constraints

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vztahem mezi kreativitou překladatele a různými druhy omezení, se kterými se překladatel musí potýkat v rozličných typech textů. Přestože celý překladatelský proces lze ve své podstatě považovat za činnost velmi limitovanou (každý překlad je limitován svou předlohou), forma a stupeň omezení se mění v závislosti na překládaném textu i přístupu jeho autora. K názorné ukázce toho, že i navzdory různým druhům omezení překladatelská práce není pouhou mechanickou činností a že překladatel může (či dokonce musí) během překladatelského procesu jednat kreativně, byly použity rozličné texty se značnou mírou omezení spadající jak do literární, tak do neliterární oblasti.

Abstract:

The main area of interest consists in exploring the tense relationship between the translator's creativity and constraints limiting his/her work in different types of texts. Although the whole translation process is in essence a constrained activity (all translations are limited by their source texts), the form and degree of constraints vary considerably depending on the type of the text translated as well as on the approach of the original author. To demonstrate that even despite the constraints imposed, the translator's work is not a mechanical activity and that s/he has a certain freedom and may/should act creatively during the translation process, various texts with a relatively augmented degree of constraints from both non-literary and literary area were chosen and analysed.
