Irrealia in the Unofficial Czech Localization of Disco Elysium: Translation Analysis

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analyzovat překlad pseudoreálií, neboli textových prvků vyjadřujících skutečnosti spjaté s fikčním světem, v neoficiální české lokalizaci pro videohru Disco Elysium. Z hlediska translatologie je pro práci teoretickým základem teorie skoposu Hanse Vermeera, koncepty domestikace a forenizace Lawrence Venutiho a publikace o lokalizaci od Antonyho Pyma a Miguela A. Bernal-Merina. Základem pojetí konceptu fikčních světů je zde dílo Lubomíra Doležela a Marka J. P. Wolfa. Analýza staví na kvalitativních a kvantitativních údajích z korpusu pseudoreálií sestaveného z textů hry. Na základě těchto údajů je překlad zhodnocen z hlediska jeho sklonů k domestikaci či forenizaci. Překlad je také posouzen z praktického hlediska jakožto dílo stvořené za jistým účelem a pro konkrétní cílovou skupinu.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to analyze the translation of irrealia, or expressions refer-ring to realities specific to a fictional world, in an unofficial Czech localization made for the video game Disco Elysium. In terms of translation theory, the thesis is based on the skopos theory of Hans Vermeer, Lawrence Venuti’s concepts of domestication and foreigniza-tion, and works on localization by Anthony Pym and Miguel A. Bernal-Merino. The conception of fictional worlds reflects the ideas of Lubomír Doležel and Mark J. P. Wolf. The analysis is built upon quantitative and qualitative data obtained from a corpus of irrealia taken from the game texts. Based on the findings from the analysis, an evaluation is made on the translation’s domestication and foreignization tenden-cies and its performance as a work purposely created for a target audience.
