The Class Structure of Czech Republic from the Perspective of Schwartz's Value Portraits

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje třídní podmíněnosti hodnot v České republice v letech 2004-2012. Jejím primárním záměrem je přispět do mozaiky zkoumání porevoluční diferenciace české společnosti, jež se odehrává nejen v ekonomické rovině, ale i z hlediska jednání a postojů. Výzkumné otázky, na něž odpovídá, jsou: a) Byly hodnoty ve sledovaném období třídně podmíněny?; b) Došlo k posílení vztahu mezi třídní příslušností a hodnotovými orientacemi? Při konceptualizaci hodnot se práce opírá převážně o projekt Shaloma Schwartze, který specifikuje deset univerzálních hodnotových typů. Za pomoci této teorie a na ní postaveném měřicím nástroji, tzv. hodnotových portrétech, je testována Kohnova hypotéza o rozdílných třídních preferencích hodnot samostatnosti a konformity, vycházejících z odlišné míry autonomie v zaměstnání. Výsledky bivariační a multivariční analýzy poukazují, že lze nalézt smysluplný vztah mezi postavením jedince na trhu práce a jeho zastávanými preferencemi i u dalších hodnot - bezpečnosti, úspěchu a moci. Jelikož však třídní příslušnost není jediným faktorem podílejícím se utváření hodnotových preferencí, práce přispívá i k pochopení vlivu dalších sociálních charakteristik na hodnotové priority – věku, genderu, vzdělání a religiozity. Z metodologického hlediska je možné práci podřadit pod sekundární analýzu dat, která je založena na souborech pocházejících z výzkumného šetření European Social Survey (ESS).

Abstract:

This thesis is devoted to class conditionality of values in the Czech Republic in 2004 – 2012. Its main focus is to contribute to a mosaic of research of differentiation in the Czech Republic after the revolution. The differentiation takes place not only on the economical level but also on the level of conduct and attitudes. The research questions that this thesis tries to answer are: a) Were the values in the monitored period conditioned based on class? b) Has the association between class membership and value orientation strengthened? When the thesis deals with a conceptualization of values, it is based mainly on a project of Shalom Schwartz that specifies ten universal value types. This theory, and a tool based on it – value portraits, is used for testing the Kohn hypothesis about different class preferences of values of self-direction and conformity that results from a various level of autonomy in an occupation. The results of bivariate and multivariate analysis show that we can find a meaningful relationship between an individual`s position in the labour market and the individual`s preferences concerning other values – security, success and power. Because class membership is not the only factor contributing to determining value preferences, the thesis also helps understand the influence of other social characteristics on value preferences of an individual – age, gender, education and religiosity. From a methodological point of view, the thesis can be ranked under a secondary analysis of data that is based on data from European Social Survey.
