Sandstone Palettes from the PPNB site of Basta (Jordan): question of production technology and function

Abstract:

Broušená kamenná industrie je poměrně málo prostudovaným oborem v archeologii, ačkoliv představuje významnou součást archeologického záznamu. Broušené nástroje se poměrně běžně vyskytují na archeologických lokalitách od konce pleistocénu. Jejich studium může pomoci lépe pochopit rozličné aspekty zaniklých společností: dělbu práce, stravu, technologii, ekonomické aspekty etc. Práce se zabývá takzvanými paletami z jordánské lokality Basta datované do předkeramického neolitu B. (někdy také označovanými jako brousky, leštítka). Tyto malé pískovcové předměty nesou četné známky po používání a zřejmě i po výrobě. Hlavním cílem této práce je rekonstrukce fází „života“ těchto předmětů od těžby/sběru suroviny, výrobu přes použití až po depozici. Tato práce využívá trasologickou analýzu na makroskopické úrovni. Cílem je zjistit jakým způsobem byly artefakty používány. Nashromážděná data by měla pomoci zařadit palety do socio-ekonomického kontextu Basty. Dalším výstupem je předběžný návrh archeologického experimentu, který by měl být součástí budoucího výzkumu funkce palet.

Abstract:

The ground stone industry is one of the least studied issues in archaeology, although ground stones represent a significant amount of artefacts on many archaeological sites. In general, these artefacts hide important information concerning many aspects of past life such as labour division, diet, economy, technology etc. This thesis deals with so-called “palettes” (sometimes also called “whetstones” or “polishing stones”) from the Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B site of Basta. These usually small, rectangular sandstone slabs carry traces of active use and some of them could also be interpreted as marks caused by the manufacturing process. The main goal of my thesis is trying to reconstruct a part of the "biography" of these artefacts from the raw material selection and manufacture to use and the end of the active tool life. A macroscopic analysis of surfaces is included in this thesis, in order to determine the kinetics of a tool manipulator and identify different activities involved in the tool production. The collected data were used in the interpretation of the socio-economical context of palettes in the Neolithic Basta. Moreover, the results of this analysis are used in the outline of a replicative study which will be a part of the future research on the materials worked by the "palettes".
