Militant Suffragettes and Their Influence on Women's Suffrage in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměří na radikální sufražetky, jejich vliv na vývoj hnutí sufražetek a získání volebního práva žen ve Spojeném království Velké Británie a Irska. Analyzuje důvody a skutečnosti, které vedly ke vzniku militantního hnutí sufražetek. Pozornost bude věnována jejich formám extremistických protestů a také konkrétním případům militantních sufražetek, například Emily Davisonové (1872–1913), která položila za toto hnutí život. Sledována bude i reakce dobového tisku a společnosti na činy radikálních sufražetek. Práce se bude opírat o primární dobové prameny v anglickém jazyce, zejména o autobiografie Emmeline Pankhurstové (1858–1928) a její dcery Sylvie Pankhurstové (1882–1960), stejně tak o dobový tisk české a anglické provenience. Získané poznatky budou konfrontovány se závěry sumarizovanými v doposud publikované odborné literatuře v rámci nejnovější britské historiografické produkce. Cílem práce bude vysvětlit příčiny radikalizace sufražetek, přiblížit jejich vliv na veřejné mínění a na získání hlasovacího práva, čemuž byla v české historiografii v uplynulých letech věnována jen okrajová pozornost.

Abstract:

My bachelor's thesis will be focused on radical suffragettes, their influence on the development of the suffragette movement, and women's suffrage in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It analyzes the reasons and facts that lead to the formation of the militant suffragette movement. Attention will be paid to their forms of extremist protest as well as specific cases of militant suffragettes such as Emily Davison (1872–1913), who gave her life for this movement. The reaction of the contemporary press and society to the actions of radical suffragettes will also be observed. The work will be based on primary periodical sources in the English language, especially the autobiographies of Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928) and her daughter Sylvia Pankhurst (1882–1960), as well as periodical print of Czech and English provenance. Gained knowledge will be confronted with the conclusions summarized in the latest British historiographical professional literature published so far. The goal of the thesis will be to explain the causes of the radicalization of the suffragettes, what influence did suffragettes had on public opinion and on obtaining the right to vote, which has received only marginal attention in Czech historiography in recent years.
