Risk management in commercial bank

Abstract:

The present Bachelor thesis deals with the process and methods of risk management at a commercial bank. The first theoretical part of the thesis defines the commercial bank as a specific business entity that is exposed to many financial risks while conducting its activities. Further, it describes individual financial risks, the process of their management and specific tools being applied to manage particular risks. The conclusion of the theoretical part is devoted to Basel Capital Agreements. The application part of the thesis describes the risk management system applied by a specific commercial bank – VÚB, a.s. The Bank´s objective of managing the risks is to ensure its long-term competitiveness, to achieve its strategic targets as well as to comply with any regulatory requirements. The work deals with the Bank´s strategy and policies for managing risks, the responsible departments and the process in place for assessing the Bank´s internal capital. Further, it describes the methodology of selected financial risks, as applied by this bank entity. In the conclusion, the risk management system of the Bank is assessed in terms of its position in market, opportunities and threats.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá procesom a metódami riadenia rizík v komerčnej banke. Prvá teoretická časť práce vymedzuje komerčnú banku ako špecifický podnikateľský subjekt, ktorý je pri svojich aktivitách vystavený mnohým finančným rizikám. Ďalej popisuje jednotlivé finančné riziká, proces ich riadenia a konkrétne nástroje uplatňované pri riadení jednotlivých rizík. Záver teoretickej časti sa venuje Bazilejským kapitálovým dohodám. Aplikačná časť práce popisuje systém riadenia rizík v konkrétnej komerčnej banke – VÚB, a.s. Úlohou riadenia rizík banky je zabezpečiť jej dlhodobú konkurencieschopnosť, splnenie strategických cieľov, ako aj naplnenie regulačných požiadaviek. Venuje sa stratégii a konkrétnym dokumentom riadenia rizík v banke, zodpovedným útvarom a procesu hodnotenia vnútorného kapitálu banky. Ďalej popisuje metodológiu vybraných finančných rizík, uplatňovanú v tejto banke. V závere hodnotíme systém riadenia rizika banky z hľadiska jej trhovej pozície, príležitostí a hrozieb.
