Stieg Larsson’s Millenium – Social Criticism in Contemporary Detective Fiction

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá postavením spisovatele Stiega Larssona mezi současnými autory detektivní literatury. V první řade poskytuje stručný přehled vývoje kriminální literatury a charakterizuje skandinávský odvětví daného žánru. Hlavním cílem práce je zaměřit se na Larssonovu populární trilogii Millenium a popsat určité otázky v díle, které se zabývají kritikou současné společenské situace ve Švédsku plném korupci, rasismu a násilí. Romány představují tyto otázky prostřednictvím hlavních postav. Larsson především představuje novináře Mikaela Blomkvista, který se snaží odhalit tyto zločiny. Kromě toho, tahle práce se zabývá zobrazením násilného chování vůči ženám v trilogii Millenium. Tento problém je znázorněn prostřednictvím postavy Lisbeth Salanderové, která je obětí sexuálního zneužívání a pomáhá Blomkvistovi s pátráním po zločinech a zároveň se snaží získat osobní svobodu. Součástí práce je popis Larssonových názorů na žurnalistiku, kterou vidí jako prostředek k zamezení zmíněných problémů ve společnosti. Trilogie Millenium je zobrazená jako sbírka knih, které se drží vlastností tradičních detektivních románů, no současně obsahují významné argumenty kritiky společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the position of Stieg Larsson among the contemporary authors of detective literature. First of all, it provides a brief summary of the development of the genre of crime fiction and characterises a Scandinavian branch of the genre. The essential aim of this thesis is to focus on Stieg Larsson’s popular work of the Millenium trilogy, and describe certain issues present in the novels that deal with criticising the current economic and social state of Sweden, which is full of corruption, racism and violence. The novels represent these issues through various characters; Larsson primarily introduces a character of a journalist Mikael Blomkvist who tries to uncover these crimes. Moreover, the thesis is concerned with the trilogy’s portrayal of explicit violent behaviour against women in the society. This is shown through the character of Lisbeth Salander, a victim of sexual abuse, who helps Blomkvist uncover crimes while trying to gain personal freedom. The thesis shows Larsson’s views of journalism as a means of pointing out and preventing the mentioned problems in the society. In conclusion, the Millenium trilogy is presented as a collection of books that possess qualities of traditional detective novels, as well as significant arguments of social criticism.
