Empathy and its relationship to dimensions of personality: The comparison of psychology and technology students

Abstract:

The research deals with a comparison of psychology students and technology students and some differences in their empathy and personality dimensions. The paper is based on Baron-Cohen’s empathy theory which assumes that every person has a certain empathy mechanism determining the extension of his or her empathy. The author in his research of cognitive styles of empathizing and systemizing points out the findings that different types of personalities tend to choose certain fields of study. Our aim is to compare psychology and technology female students in their empathy and personality dimensions. The participants included 50 psychology students and 50 technology students. As measuring tools, we used EQ questionnaire, NEO-Five Factor Inventory and BIDR (Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding). Scientific researches show different predictions about a higher level of empathy in humanities students. The results in our work prove an insignificant difference in empathy in behalf of psychology students. When comparing relations of personality dimensions (NEO-FFI) and empathy quotient (EQ), the relation of psychology students and technology students was demonstrated in different dimensions. EQ score of technology students correlate with neuroticism and extraversion. Psychology students’ EQ correlates with openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness. The gained results emphasize the differences in empathy and personality dimensions between humanities students and scientific students.

Abstract:

Výskum sa zaoberá porovnaním študentiek techniky a psychológie a rozdielov v ich empatii a osobnostných dimenziách. Práca vychádza z teórie empatie Baron-Cohena, ktorý predpokladá, že každý človek má vyvinutý empatický mechanizmus, ktorý určuje, do akej miery je empatický. Jeho výskum kognitívnych štýlov empatizácie a systemizácie naznačuje, že k štúdiu rôznych vedných odborov inklinujú rôzne typy osobností. Cieľom nášho výskumu je komparácia študentiek techniky a študentiek psychológie v oblasti ich empatie a osobnostných dimenzií. Výskumu sa zúčastnilo 50 študentiek psychológie a 50 študentiek techniky. Ako meracie nástroje boli použité dotazníky Kvocient empatie (EQ), NEO-päťfaktorový osobnostný inventár (NEO-FFI) a BIDR (Balanced Inventory of desirable responding). Vedecké štúdie sa v predpoklade o vyššom stupni empatie u študentov humanitných vied rozchádzajú. V našom výskume bol v empatii preukázaný neveľký rozdiel, v prospech študentiek psychológie. Pri porovnaní vzťahov osobnostných dimenzií (NEO-FFI) a kvocientu empatie (EQ) sa u študentiek techniky a študentiek psychológie preukázal vzťah v rozdielnych dimenziách. U študentiek techniky koreluje skóre EQ s neuroticizmom a extraverziou. U študentiek psychológie EQ koreluje s otvorenosťou voči skúsenosti, prívetivosťou a svedomitosťou. Získané výsledky poukazujú na rozdiely v empatii a osobnostných dimenziách medzi študentkami humanitného a exaktného odboru.
