Nicholas Negroponte's Digital World

Abstract:

„Digitální svět Nicholase Negroponta“ Ve své práci se zabýváme vybranými texty a sociálními aktivitami Nicholase Negroponta, který je považován za průkopníka informačních technologií. Negroponte vystudoval architekturu na MIT, kde se zabýval počítačových rozhraním, postupně se svými vizemi o účincích ICT stal takřka architektem „postinformačního věku“, jak jej sám nazývá. Jeho dosud poslední kniha Digitální svět je citována jako manifest post-informačního věku. Cílem práce je analyzovat jím propagované účinky ICT na sociální aktéry, zejména jejich emancipační a liberalizační potenciál, které Negroponte zdůrazňuje především. Na základě vyraných konceptů spojených s jeho pojetím ICT testujeme tezi, že Negroponte je ve svých předpokladech účinků ICT moderní. Výchozí tezi rámujeme třemi otázkami: jaká je role jednotlivce v Negropontově pojetí digitálního světa, v čem jsou jeho východiska moderní a v čem je Negropontovo pojetí digitálního světa nové v porovnání s Marshallem McLuhanem. Svou interpretaci zakládáme především na studiu jeho tří knih The Architecture Machine / Architektonický stroj (1970), Soft Architecture machine / Snadný architektonický srtroj (1975) a Digitální svět (česky 2001) Being Digital) a vybraných projektů, v nichž je zainteresován: MIT Media Lab, časopis Wire a projekt OLPC.

Abstract:

„Nicholas Negroponte´s Digital World“ The diploma thesis aims at interpreting selected texts and social activities of Nicholas Negroponte, „the cyber guru no.1“, a technooptimist and a visionary of ICT. Studied architecture at MIT, he have became an architect of a new digital world, „the postinformation age“as he calls it. His so far latest book Being Digital (1995) is being quoted as a manifesto of post-information age and he is considered influential and significant contributor to the „new media discourse.” We want to analyze his promoted idea of influences and effects of ICT on social actors, especially their emancipatory and liberating potential, as Negroponte has suggested. Mapping out key concepts of his work on ICT we want to argue that despite proclaimed and promoted emerging digital era as a radically new culture, Nicholas Negroponte is modern and in his presumptions. The thesis is surrounded around three main questions: what is the role of an individual in Negroponte´s digital world, why he is rather modern in his presumptions and what is he specific in, in comparison to Marshall McLuhan.We base our interpretation mainly on reading his three texts (The Architecture Machine, Soft Architecture machine and Being Digital), together with studying selected social activities he has been involved (MIT Media Lab, Wired and OLPC project).
