Rushin index and its use in predicting economic activity

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce Rushin index a jeho využití při předpovědi ekonomické aktivity je posoudit potenciál Rushin indexu jako předstihového indikátoru ekonomické aktivity v České republice. Ta je v práci definována vybranými ukazateli trhu práce a inflace. Analýza pokrývá období 2008–2024 a prostřednictvím citlivostní analýzy zohledňuje také dopady koronavirové krize. V práci je nejprve vymezen koncept předstihových indikátorů a následně je představen Rushin index, spolu s jeho konstrukcí a dosavadním testováním. V metodické části jsou popsány nástroje pro zkoumání vztahů mezi proměnnými, konkrétně křížové korelace, ADL modely, testy Grangerovy kauzality a metody pro hodnocení predikční výkonnosti. V závěru jsou prezentovány výsledky ekonometrických analýz, které jsou diskutovány v kontextu existující literatury. Výsledky naznačují, že se předstihové vlastnosti Rushin indexu liší v závislosti na zvoleném ukazateli a konkrétním časovém období.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor’s thesis Rushin index and its use in predicting economic activity is to evaluate the potential of the Rushin index as a leading indicator of economic activity in the Czech Republic. Economic activity is defined using selected labor market and inflation indicators. The analysis covers the period from 2008 to 2024 and includes a sensitivity analysis to account for the effects of the COVID-19 crisis. The thesis first outlines the concept of leading indicators and then focuses on the construction of the Rushin index and its previous empirical testing. The methodological section describes the tools used to examine relationships between variables, specifically cross-correlations, ADL models, Granger causality tests, and methods for evaluating predictive performance. The final chapters present the results of the econometric analyses, which are then interpreted and discussed in the context of existing literature. The findings suggest that the predictive power of the Rushin index depends on both the chosen indicator and the analysed period.
