Conversion to the Falum Gong movement

Abstract:

Práce Konverze k hnutí Falun Gong je zaměřena především na průběh a strukturu konverze k tomuto hnutí. Základními specifiky této práce je její zaměření na konkrétní náboženskou skupinu, dále vlastní terénní výzkum jako hlavní zdroj dat a uchopení tohoto problému jako zcela autonomního náboženského fenoménu. Práci jsem rozdělil do čtyř hlavních částí. První se zabývá specifiky hnutí Falun Gong jako předmětu studia. Blíže rozebírá používání termínů vlastní nauky uvnitř hnutí apod. Tato část je zaměřena také na prameny použité v práci a podrobnější popis postupu při terénním výzkumu. Druhá část se věnuje obecně problému konverze. Jsou zde popsány jednotlivé aspekty tohoto procesu jako: motiv, problematika členství, role autority a budoucnost náboženské skupiny. Do třetí části je zahrnut už samotný problém konverze k Falun Gong. Zaměřuje se především na prezentaci hnutí na veřejnosti, jako na základní předpoklad budoucí konverze a s tím související potencionální atraktivitu náboženského společenství vůči novým konvertitům. Tato prezentace je dále rozdělena na jednotlivé činitele a ty jsou následně blíže rozpracováni v samostatných kapitolách. Hlubšímu zkoumání byli podrobeni činitelé jako: spojení s východní filosofií, součást praktik qigong, praktikováním k pevnému zdraví, nebo perzekuovaný a nenáboženský Falun Gong. Z celé této části je zřejmé, že nejsilnějším činitelem v prezentaci tohoto hnutí je jeho zaměření na alternativní vztah k lidskému tělu a jeho zdraví. Závěr se věnuje hlubším souvislostem spojeným s konverzí k Falun Gong. Zamýšlí se nad důvody, jež vedou určitou část společnosti k zavržení moderní medicíny a k hledání alternativy, která by jim poskytovala větší podíl na správě vlastního těla.

Abstract:

The work “Conversion to Falun Gong Movement” deals above all with the process and structure of the conversion to this movement . The main specifics of the work are its orientation at a particular religious group, further my own field research as the main source of information and approaching this problem as an entirely autonomous religious phenomenon. I have divided the work into four main parts. The first one deals with the specifics of Falun Gong movement as an object of study. It analyses in more detail the use of terms of the actual teaching within the movement etc. This part is also aimed at the sources used in the work and a closer description of the procedure of the field research. The second part is devoted to the topic of conversion in general. It describes single aspects of the process like: the motive, the questions of membership, the role of authority and the future of a religious group. The third part already contains the very problem of conversion to Falun Gong. It focuses especially on the presentation of the movement in public as the key condition of the future conversion and on the related potential attractiveness of the congregation for new converts. This public presentation is further divided into separate factors that are developed in detail in their own chapters. They scrutinize factors like connection with eastern philosophy, part of qigong practices, practising leading to sound health, or Falun Gong persecuted and non-religious. The obvious result of the whole part is that the chief factor of the public presentation of this movement is its orientation at an alternative approach to the human body and its health. The conclusion deals with further implications connected with a conversion to Falun Gong. It speculates upon the reasons that make a certain part of the society reject modern medicine and search for an alternative that would give them a greater share of their own body control.
