An examination of English language textbooks and their implementation with a focus on proper pronunciation

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je analyzovat učebnice a jejich zaměření na výuku výslovnosti s cílem identifikovat jejich silné a slabé stránky v této oblasti. Práce také poskytne poznatky a doporučení pro učitele anglického jazyka, zaměřuje se totiž na zkoumání a porovnávání učebnic, čímž může učitelům pomoct při výběru učebnice pro jejich třídu. Práce se zaměřuje na učebnice pro šesté třídy základních škol v ČR. Bude zkoumáno užití prostředků k nacvičování správné anglické výslovnosti v učebnicích angličtiny, konkrétně v často používaných učebnicích Project, Bloggers a Project Explore. Praktická část práce je z části postavena na důkladné analýze učebnic s konkrétním zaměřením na správnou výslovnost, která bude zkoumat množství cvičení a jejich vliv na výuku výslovnosti. Finální část je realizována kvalitativním výzkumem v hodině anglického jazyka v 6. třídách, ve kterém byla prací s poslechovými cvičeními a pracovními listy zkoumána efektivita a funkčnost konkrétních cvičení ze všech tří rozebíraných učebnic.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to analyze textbooks and their focus on pronunciation instruction with the goal of identifying their strengths and weaknesses in this area. The thesis will also provide insights and recommendations for English language teachers, as it focuses on the examination and comparison of textbooks, thus aiding teachers in selecting appropriate materials for their classes. The thesis focuses on textbooks for the sixth grades of primary schools in the Czech Republic. It will investigate the use of resources for practicing correct English pronunciation in English textbooks, specifically in commonly used textbooks such as Project, Bloggers, and Project Explore. The practical part of the thesis is partly based on a thorough analysis of textbooks with a specific focus on pronunciation, which will examine the quantity of exercises and their impact on pronunciation instruction. The final part involves qualitative research conducted during English language classes in the sixth grades, where the effectiveness and functionality of specific exercises from all three textbooks under scrutiny were examined through listening exercises and worksheets.
