The stigmatization of severe mental illness in parents: qualitative systematic review

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na stigmatizaci rodičů se závažným duševním onemocněním. Cílem je poskytnout přehled dosavadních poznatků se zaměřením na projevy a dopady stigmatizace a také na vnímanou podporu odborníků v oblasti rodičovství. Na základě systematického vyhledávání v elektronických databázích EBSCO, Scopus, Medline, ProQuest a PubMed bylo nalezeno celkem 8 kvalitativních studií, které splňovaly inkluzivní kritéria. Výsledky naznačují, že stigma je významným faktorem v životě rodičů se závažným duševním onemocněním. Jeden z důsledků stigmatu je odrazování od vyhledání potřebné pomoci a negativní vliv na fungování dětí těchto rodičů. Také bylo zjištěno, že profesionální péče naráží na určité limity a může být dalším zdrojem diskriminace. Prezentovaná zjištění mohou být podnětem pro zkvalitnění postupů poskytované péče těmto klientům a také být přínosem při vytváření destigmatizačních programů.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with the stigmatization of parents with severe mental illness (SMI). It aims to provide an overview of the existing knowledge with a focus on the displays and effects of stigma and also on the perceived support of professionals in the field of parenting. Based on systematic search through the EBSCO, Scopus, Medline, ProQuest and PubMed electronic databases, altogether 8 qualitative studies were found which met the inclusion criteria. The results suggest that stigma is a significant factor in the lives of parents with SMI. One of stigma’s effects is discouragement from seeking support and negative impact on the functioning of the children of these parents. It was also found that the professional care encounters certain limits and can be another source of discrimination. The presented findings may be an impulse for improving the care practices provided to these clients and also be of merit when designing destigmatization programs.
