Human-AI Interaction in Mental Health Support: A Qualitative Study

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá oblastí interakce člověk-AI v kontextu podpory duševního zdraví. Nejprve jsou zde popsány aspekty konverzační umělé inteligence, její využití ve stávající psychologické péči a teoretická oblast interakce člověk-AI. V empirické části bylo cílem hlubší pochopení zkušeností jedinců, kteří se pravidelně obracejí na generativní AI v otázkách svého duševního zdraví. Skrze tematickou analýzu bylo nalezeno pět témat. Výsledky naznačují, že přestože si jedinci cení schopnost AI poskytovat rychlou emoční podporu a psychoedukaci, vnímají AI jako doplněk, nikoliv náhradu lidské podpory. Výsledky přispívají k lepšímu pochopení tohoto vznikajícího společenského fenoménu a diskutuje možnosti využití konverzační AI jako doplněk k tradiční lidské psychické péči, která pro mnohé zůstává nedostupná či stigmatizující.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the field of human-AI interaction in the context of mental health support. It first describes the aspects of conversational artificial intelligence, its application in current psychological care, and the theoretical field of human-AI interaction. The empirical part aims to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of individuals who regularly turn to generative AI for their mental health needs. Through thematic analysis, five themes were identified. The findings suggest that while individuals value AI's ability to provide quick emotional support and psychoeducation, they perceive it as a complement rather than a replacement for human support. The results contribute to a better understanding of this emerging societal phenomenon and discuss the potential of conversational AI as a supplement to traditional human mental health care, which for many often remains inaccessible or stigmatized.
