Death and dying as part of the nursing profession

Abstract:

Cíl: Hlavním cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit, jak sestry subjektivně prožívají smrt. Dílčí cíle byly zaměřeny na zkušenosti sester s umíráním jejich pacientů, jejich postoji ke smrti a jejich způsobu, jak se se smrtí vyrovnat. Metodika: Bylo použito kvalitativní šetření prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů (leden 2020 - únor 2021) s osmi sestrami z oddělení onkologie a hemato-onkologie. Jednotlivé rozhovory byly nahrány a doslovné transkripce přepsány do textové podoby a následně podrobeny obsahové analýze. Pro kvalitativní šetření byla zvolena metoda interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Výsledky: Na základě analýzy získaných dat byly stanoveny čtyři hlavní kategorie: setkání se smrtí; adaptace na smrt; představa vlastní smrti; vnímání smrti. Na základě získaných dat je zřejmé, že si všechny dotazované sestry připadaly připraveny na setkání se smrtí až díky nynějšímu zaměstnání. Sestry o smrti více přemýšlí a přemýšlí i o představě vlastní smrti. Závěr: Na závěr lze říci, že sestry pracující na hemato-onkologii a onkologii se díky častému setkávání se smrtí svých pacientů naučily brát smrt jako běžnou součást své profese a života. Díky svému zaměstnání si více uvědomují smrtelnost a více si života váží. Sestry se snaží svým pacientům zajistit důstojný odchod ze života a být mu v případě nepřítomnosti rodiny nablízku, aby neumíral osamocen. Obtížnější adaptaci na úmrtí svých pacientů udávají sestry z hemato-onkologie, protože u nich jsou pacienti hospitalizováni i několik měsíců, tudíž je znají mnohdy hodně důvěrně a znají jejich životní osudy a příběhy. Abstract:

Objective: The main aim of the thesis was to find out how nurses subjectively experience with death. Partial goals were focused on the experience of nurses with dying of their patients, their attitudes towards death and their way of coping with death. Methodology: A qualitative survey was used through semi-structured interviews (January 2020 - February 2021) with 8 nurses from the Department of Oncology and Haemato-Oncology. Individual interviews were recorded and verbatim transcribed into a text using literal transcription and then subjected to a content analysis. The method of interpretative phenomenological anylysis was chosen for the qualitative investigations. Results: Based on the analysis of the obtained informations were determined four main categories: Meeting with death; Adaptation to death; The idea of his own death; Perception of death. Based on the informations in theses, it is clear fact, that all of the interviewed nurse felt prepared to face death only because of thein current employment. Nurses think more about death and they also think about the idea of thein own death. Conclusion: Nurses working in hemato-oncology and oncology have learned to deal with death as a normal part of their profession and life. Their job make them more aware of the mortality. Nurses try to give their patients a dignified dying and be close to them in the absence of family, so the patients do not die alone. Nurses in the haemato-oncological ward report a more difficult adaptation to the deaths of their patients, because patients are hospitalized for several months, so they often know them familiarly, and they know their life destiny and life stories.
