Abstract:

Práce se zabývá historií čínských imigrantů v Austrálii. Přestože jejich podíl na formování australského státu je nepopiratelný, v minulosti byli často utlačováni a diskriminováni. Politika bílé Austrálie, kterou se tento stát po dlouhou dobu vyznačoval, jim v očích Australanů přiřkla status nežádoucí a nebezpečné skupiny. V druhé polovině dvacátého století se však jejich situace výrazně zlepšila; stejně tak se zlepšily i vztahy mezi Čínou a Austrálií. Tato práce rovněž objasňuje pozici čínských imigrantů v Austrálii v širším kontextu australské historie.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with Chinese immigrants in Australia. Although their contribution to the Australian nationhood was substantial, they were, for the most part, oppressed and discriminated. The White Australia Policy, which dominated Australian political discourse for a very long time, made them undesirable and dangerous in the eyes of the Australians. However, the situation of the Chinese improved significantly in the latter half of the 20th century, as Sino-Australian relations did in general. In addition to exploring the history of the Chinese in Australia, this work analyzes the subject in context of Australian immigration in general.
