The semiotization of the toponym 974 in public space and in graffiti in Reunion Island

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the analysis of identity featured toponymy in the public space of Reunion Island, primarily represented by graffiti and advertising signs, as well as in the virtual public space of social networks. The starting point is a corpus of approximately 155 photographs taken on the island of Réunion between 2021 and 2022, accompanied by screenshots from social media and older photographs and questionnaires provided by the supervisor. The main hypothesis regarding the identity-based use of the number designating this overseas department of France (974) in the public space has demonstrated territorial appropriation through several forms of usage (e.g., in subcultures, occasional movements, or as a marketing tool). The secondary hypothesis of the study, which focuses on the decomposed reading of neuf-sept-quatre (instead of neuf-cents-soixante-quatorze) as a common identity sign of Reunion inhabitants, primarily used to create wordplay, has been confirmed as illustrative, with significant contributions from typical features of Reunionese Creole. In the final part of the paper, the usage of the toponym 974 on social networks was analysed, and it was found that it is commonly used as an identity element to distinguish the inhabitants of Réunion from the rest of France and the Francophonie.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na analýzu identitárně podmíněné toponymie v réunionském veřejném prostoru, který reprezentují především graffiti a reklamní nápisy a dále také ve virtuálním veřejném prostoru sociálních sítí. Východiskem se stal především korpus cca 155 fotografií pořízených na ostrově Réunion v období let 2021 a 2022, doprovodně také záchyty ze sociálních sítí a starší fotografie a dotazníky poskytnuté školitelkou. Ověřovaná hlavní hypotéza o identitárním použití čísla označující tento zámořský department Francie (974) ve veřejném prostoru prokázala teritoriální apropriaci hned několika způsoby použití (např. v subkulturách, v občanských hnutích nebo jako marketingový nástroj). Vedlejší hypotéza práce o rozloženém způsobu čtení neuf-sept-quatre (namísto neuf-cents-soixante-quatorze) jakožto společného identitárního znaku obyvatel Réunionu, který slouží především pro vytvoření slovních hříček, se potvrdila jako průkazná, navíc i se zásadním přispěním typických rysů réunionské kreolštiny. V závěru práce bylo analyzováno použití toponyma 974 na sociálních sítích, přičemž se prokázalo jeho běžné užití jakožto identitárního prvku pro rozlišení obyvatel Réunionu od zbytku Francie a frankofonie.
