Photosynthesis of lichens from the Antarctic Peninsula and South Patagonia regions in relation to environmental factors

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnuji lišejníkové flóře oblastí Antarktického poloostrova a Jižní Patagonie. Hlavní pozornost je věnována přehledu a porovnání experimentálních prací studujících lišejníky ve vztahu k faktorům prostředí, porovnání odborného zaměření těchto prací a samotné lišejníkové flory v obou sledovaných oblastech. Tyto oblasti Jižní polokoule patří mezi extrémně chladná prostředí, kde navíc v současnosti dochází k největším klimatickým změnám. To přináší velký zájem odborné i laické veřejnosti o studium obranných mechanismů, pomocí kterých extremofilní autotrofní organismy v těchto oblastech přežívají. V souvislosti s odolností lišejníků ke stresu byl v rámci této bakalářské práce uskutečněn experiment, který se zaměřil na porovnání vlivu nízké teploty na fotosyntézu lišejníků z cílových oblastí. Testovanými druhy z Jižní Patagonie byly Pseudocyphellaria sp. a Usnea longissima a z Antarktického poloostrova druh Usnea antarctica. Také byla studována účinnost ribitolu jako ochranné látky proti působení mrazových teplot na fotosyntetické charakteristiky. K hodnocení stavu fotosyntetického aparátu je využito metody indukované fluorescence chlorofylu a.

Abstract:

In this thesis, lichen flora from Antarctic Peninsula and South Patagonia is reviewed. The main focus is dedicated to the comparison of experimental studies dealing with lichens in relation to environmental factors, their particular aims and overview of lichen flora of the two particular regions. These regions of Southern hemisphere belong to extreme cold environments, where, in addition, the most climatic changes in the world has been observed recently. It brings great interest of scientific community to the studies of the protective mechanisms of extremophilic organisms, such as lichens, that help them to survive. In connection with resistantance of lichens to stress, an experimental as part of these Bachelor thesis was carried out. It focused comparison of the effect of low temperature on photosynthesis of lichens from particular regions. Studied species were Pseudocyphellaria sp. and Usnea longissima from South Patagonia and Usnea antarctica from Antarctic Peninsula. Additionaly, an efficiency of ribitol as protective substance of lichens during exposition of thalli to subzero temperature was studied. The method of induced chlorofyll a fluorescence was used to assess functioning of lichen photosynthetic apparatus at low and freezing temperature.
