Post-editing is not just a revision of machine translation. An empirical contribution to post-editing competencies in the language combination German-Czech

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the subject of post-editing competences of non-professional translators. The theoretical part provides a brief insight into the history of post-editing and this field of research. It then goes on to detail of the post-editing definition and the differences between post-editing, proofreading and the traditional translation without the use of machine translation. Particularly important is the competency model for post-editing, which implies that it is essential for post-editing to acquire knowledge and experience beyond the model for translators. The paper summarizes the available material on learning how to post-edit from both scholarly contributions and other sources. The practical part aims to find out whether students in the field of translation in the German-Czech language combination possess such knowledge and skills about machine translation and post-editing as to meet the requirements for a professional level. The input data are 4 texts of different text types and their machine translation by the free version of neural translator Deepl. The errors in the machine translation are evaluated according to the error analysis method. The participants of the experiment are given a source text and its machine translation in the CAT-tool SDL Trados to post-edit according to the guidelines for full post-editing by TAUS. They are also provided with tips for effective post-editing and specific step-by-step instructions from the firm SDL Trados. The aim of the evaluation of the target texts after post-editing is to find out both the percentage of successfully corrected errors and the distribution of corrected errors by categories, and thus to find out which errors in neural machine translation are well recognizable and which are at the same time within the capabilities of non-professional post-editors to correct them.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou kompetencí k post-editingu u neprofesionálních překladatelů/ek. Teoretická část poskytuje krátký vhled do historie post-editingu a této oblasti bádání. Dále se detailně věnuje definici post-editingu a odlišením tohoto způsobu překládání od korektury a tradičního pojetí překladu bez využití strojového překladu. Důležité je zejména představení modelu schopností pro post-editing, ze kterého vyplývá, že pro post-editing je nezbytné načerpat vědění a zkušenosti nad rámec modelu pro překladatele/ky. Práce shrnuje dostupné materiály k vzdělávání se v oblasti post-editingu jak z vědeckých příspěvků, tak z dalších zdrojů. Praktická část si klade za cíl zjistit, zda studující z oboru překladatelství v jazykové kombinaci němčina-čeština oplývají takovým vědění a schopnostmi o strojovém překladu a post-editingu, aby dostáli požadavkům na profesní úroveň této služby. Vstupními daty jsou 4 texty různých textových druhů a jejich strojový překlad z bezplatné verze neurálního překladače Deepl. Ve strojovém překladu jsou dle metody analýzy chyb vyhodnoceny chyby. Účastníci/e experimentu dostanou v CAT nástroji SDL Trados výchozí text a jeho strojový překlad, který mají post-editovat dle obecných zásad pro úplný post-editing od firmy TAUS. K dispozici jsou jim také tipy pro efektivní práci při post-editingu a konkrétní návod krok za krokem od firmy SDL Trados. Cílem vyhodnocení cílových textů po post-editingu je jednak zjistit procento úspěšně opravených chyb, ale také jejich rozložení dle kategorií, tedy zjištění toho, které chyby jsou v neurálním strojovém překladu dobře rozpoznatelné a zároveň je možnostech neprofesionálních post-editorů/ek je správně opravit.
