Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat dopady, které mají současné televizní seriály na společnost, v souvislosti s hodnocením lidí na základě škodlivých stereotypů, konkrétně toxické maskulinity. Tato práce staví na psychologickém a filozofickém přístupu k mužství, jeho reprezentaci v současných televizních seriálech a kombinaci obojího s ohledem na její dopady na společnost. Tato práce analyzuje pět televizních seriálů z hlediska škodlivých stereotypů, které obsahují, konkrétně se zaměřuje na fenomén toxické maskulinity. Kombinací teorie toxické maskulinity a sociálního vý-voje s mediálními vlivy a jejich dopady na lidi tato práce navíc má za cíl dokázat, že takové kulturní produkty negativně ovlivňují společnost i jednotlivce škodlivými ste-reotypy. Práce použité pro tuto práci zahrnují teoretické knihy o sociální psychologii, konkrétně Shafferův Social and Personality Develompent, a filozofická díla, jako je Miedzian a její Boys Will Be Boys. Tato téze zahrnuje také práce akademiků z databáze JSTOR a dalších zdrojů spolu s neakademickými články z The New York Times a The Guardian. Později jsou spolu s analýzou konkrétních TV seriálů zmíněny komentáře k něm a také odborné recenze, odvozené ze stránek Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic a IMDb. a recenze od profesionálních filmových a televizních kritiků, například z The Guardian a tak dále. Celkově si práce klade za cíl prozkoumat negativní účin-ky toxické maskulinity ztvárněné v pěti vybraných televizních seriálech, které je představují svým divákům.

Abstract:

The following thesis aims to examine the effects which contemporary TV series have on society in terms of people making judgments about others by making use of harmful stereotypes, specifically toxic masculinity. This thesis builds on psychological and philosophical approach to masculinity, its representation in contemporary TV series and the combination of the two regarding its effects on society. This thesis analyzes five TV series in terms of the harmful stereotypes it contains, specifically focusing on the phenomenon of toxic masculinity. Moreover, by combining the theory of toxic masculinity and social development with media influence and their effects on people, the thesis argues that such production negatively influences society and individuals by the harmful stereotypes and ideas that it contains and recreates. The works used for this thesis include theoretical books on social psychology, specifically Shaffer’s Social and Personality Development, and philosophical works, such as Miedzian’s Boys Will Be Boys. This work also includes works of academics from JSTOR and other sources together with non-academic articles from The New York Times and The Guardian. Later, together with analysis of specific TV series, comments on these and also professional reviews are mentioned, derived from Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDb. and acclaimed reviews from professional film and TV show critics, for example from The Guardian and so on. Overall, the thesis aims to examine the negative effects of toxic masculinity portrayed in five selected TV series that present them to their audiences.
