Voluntary childlessness in European countries

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá otázkou, jak charakterizovat jedince, kteří se rozhodli zůstat celoživotně bez potomků v ČR, Rakousku, Nizozemsku, východní a západní části Německa. Teoretická část pojednává o demografických změnách, druhé demografické tranzici a fenoménu dobrovolné bezdětnosti. Praktická část práce je věnována sekundární analýze dat mezinárodního komparativního výzkumu Population-related Policy Acceptance II (PPA II), který proběhl v letech 2000-2003. Na základě malého počtu dobrovolně bezdětných respondentů v České republice, byla Česká republika z analýzy dat vyřazena. Vývoj dobrovolné bezdětnosti v České republice je následně odhadován na základě výstupu statistické analýzy dat zbylých čtyř zemí. Analýza nepotvrdila výrazný rozdíl mezi jednotlivými zeměmi. Jednoznačně potvrdila vliv partnerského soužití a hodnot, které představuje dítě pro své rodiče, na dobrovolnou bezdětnost. Vyjma východního Německa, můžeme ve všech zemích potvrdit vliv náboženství a výše příjmu na rozhodnutí respondentů, zda chtějí mít děti.

Abstract:

This paper deals with aspects of voluntary childlessness in selected European countries. After showing a brief summary of the second demographic transition and the discussion of Czech professionals on main development trends occurring in the Czech Republic since early nineties of the 20th century, it focuses on factors that influence most the intentions to remain childless. The most important ones seem to be the attributed value of the child, level of education or striving for self-fulfilment and career plans. The main part of the paper presents the outcomes of secondary analysis of Population-related Policy Acceptance Study II (PPA II), an international comparative study that was organised in 14 European countries in 2000-2003. A sample pool of 4132 female respondents aged 18-49 from 4 countries - Czech Republic, Finland, the Netherlands and Poland - has been analysed. It has been confirmed that childless women set a lower value to the children than mothers or mothers-to-be. The latter female group also tends more to prefer marriage to other alternative living arrangements than the childless. Further, significant variances in childlessness-related responses have been found through all analyses with regards to the geographical location (Eastern against Western Europe).
