Regional disparities in the Visegrad Group countries

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na problematiku regionálních disparit, jejichž usměrňování je jedním z ústředních, dlouhodobých a stále aktuálních cílů regionální politiky EU. Cílem práce je posoudit rozsah a vývoj regionálních disparit v zemích Visegrádské skupiny. Analýza regionálních disparit je provedena na úrovni jednotek NUTS 2 za pomocí přístupů sigma a beta konvergence. Rozsah a vývoj regionálních disparit je zkoumán na úrovni hrubého domácího produktu, disponibilního příjmu domácností, dlouhodobé nezaměstnanosti, terciárního vzdělání a výdajů na výzkum a vývoj. Práce prokázala, jak složitá tato problematika ve skutečnosti je, neboť provedená analýza poukazuje na odlišnost výsledků v závislosti na aplikovaném přístupu. Prostřednictvím analýzy byl zároveň identifikován poměrně značný vliv regionů hlavních měst na rozsah regionálních disparit.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the issue of regional disparities, as it is one of the main, long-term and still up-to-date aims of the EU's regional policy. The aim of this thesis is to assess the extent and development of regional disparities in the Visegrad Group countries. The analysis of regional disparities is carried out at the level of NUTS 2 regions using the approaches of sigma and beta convergence. The extent and development of regional disparities is examined at the level of gross domestic product, disposable income of households, long-term unemployment, tertiary education, and expenditure on research and development. This thesis demonstrated how complex this issue really is, as the analysis shows different results depending on the applied approach. The analysis also identified relatively high influence of the capital regions on the extent of regional disparities.
