Photography as a source in historical science: Example of domestic travels of president Edvard Beneš

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se pokouší představit problematiku využití fotografie v historikově práci. Cílem její první části je prezentovat fotografii jako plnohodnotný historický pramen, představit vývoj jejího užití a její cestu do historické vědy. Rovněž jsou zde nastíněny některé možnosti a metodologické koncepty, které má historik při práci s médiem k dispozici. Druhá část práce v krátkosti představuje působení Edvarda Beneše v prezidentském úřadě se zvláštním zaměřením na jeho zájezdové aktivity. Ve třetí části je představená metodologická základna aplikována na výzkum domácích prezidentských zájezdů Edvarda Beneše. Pokoušíme se zde osvětlit, jakým způsobem fotografické médium reflektuje osobu prezidenta i celý zájezd, jaký je obraz, který je pomocí fotografie konstruován. Zajímá nás "život" fotografie v celém průběhu cesty. Diskutována je také otázka utváření historického vědomí a kolektivní paměti.

Abstract:

The present Master’s thesis tries to present the issue of the use of photography in the historian´s work. The aim of its first part is to present the photography as a full-valued historical source, to present the development of its use and its journey to the historical science. Also some possibilities and methodological concepts which are at the historian´s disposal are outlined. The second part of the work briefly presents Edvard Beneš´s activity in the Presidency with the special reference to his traveling activities. In the third part, the presented methodological base is applied on the research of the domestic presidential travels of Edvard Beneš. We try to clarify how the photography reflects the figure of the president as well as the whole travel and what the image constructed by the photography is. We are interested in the photography´s "life" in the course of the travel. The question of historical consciousness and collective memory formation is discussed.
