Integration of Muslims in the Czech Republic and in Selected Countries of the EU

Abstract:

Integrace muslimů do evropské společnosti je v současnosti jedno z nejdiskutovanějších témat. Počet muslimů v Evropě se dnes pohybuje okolo 20 mil. a stále narůstá. V souvislosti s integrací muslimů a jejich potomků se objevuje řada problémů, které musí evropské země řešit. Mezi tyto problémy patří zejména slučitelnost islámu s evropskými hodnotami a demokracií, muslimské závoje a práva žen, výuka islámu na školách, nepokoje na předměstích evropských měst, fundamentální verze islámu v mešitách a s tím spojené riziko radikalizace. Jednotlivé evropské země volí odlišný přístup k integraci muslimské komunity. Přestože tyto přístupy byly v minulosti rozdílné, většina evropských zemí se v současnosti potýká s podobnými následky.

Abstract:

The integration of Muslims into European society is one of the most discussed present issues. The number of Muslims in Europe is around 20 million today and is still rising. European countries have to solve many problems in relation to the integration of Muslims and their descendants. Among these problems are namely the compatibility of Islam with European values and democracy; Muslim veils and women’s rights; Islamic education; riots in the suburbs of European cities; fundamental Islam in mosques and the threat of radicalism. Some of the European countries have selected different approaches in the matter of integrating the muslim community. Despite the differences in these approaches, most European countries are currently facing similar consequences.
