Perceptions of generational differences among staff in children's homes

Abstract:

Cílem mé bakalářské práce bylo identifikovat přístupy a hodnoty vychovatelů generace X a generace Z v dětských domovech. Práce také pojednává o historii institucionální péče či charakterizuje mnou dvě zvolené generace. Sběr dat byl proveden prostřednictvím kvalitativního výzkumu, přesněji individuálních rozhovorů s vychovateli a jednoho skupinového rozhovoru s dětmi. Na základě informací, které mi byly poskytnuty jsem dále navrhla možnosti vícegenerační spolupráce, která je přínosem nejen pro vychovatele, ale i pro děti, které dětský domov obývají. Výsledky mého šetření ukázaly, že vychovatelé generace X zastávají roli především respektované autority a generace mladší má spíše roli přítele. Během rozhovorů jsme častokrát narazili na téma mužů v ústavní péči a ukázalo se, že muži velmi pozitivně ovlivňují žití dětí v dětských domovech a často jsou dětmi označováni za nejoblíbenější vychovatele. V ideálním případě by tedy dětské domovy měly disponovat lidmi různého věku, ale i pohlaví, protože každý z nich je pro zařízení přínosem a každý z nich disponuje svými jedinečnými přístupy.

Abstract:

The aim of my bachelor thesis was to identify the attitudes and values of generation X and generation Z workers in children's homes. The thesis also discusses the history of institutional care or characterizes my two chosen generations. Data collection was conducted through qualitative research, more specifically by individual interviews with workers and one group interview with children. Based on the informations I was provided with, I further suggested possibilities for multi-generational collaboration that is beneficial not only for the workers but also for the children who live in the children's home. The results of my investigation showed that the workers of generation X mainly hold the role of respected authority and the younger generation has more of a friend role. During our interviews, the topic of men in residential care came up frequently and it showed, that men have a very positive influence on the children's living in children's homes and are often identified by the children as the most favourite workers. Ideally, then, children's homes should have people of different ages as well as genders, as each of them is an asset to the facility and each has their own unique approaches.
