Visual Representation of Social Development in Czechoslovakia in the 60s and 70s

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá otázkou, jakým způsobem je reflektován společenský vývoj v České republice na mezi šedesátými a sedmdesátými lety ve fotografiích uveřejněných v dobovém tisku. Jedná se především o změnu společenského klimatu, která proběhla v souvislosti s intervencí vojsk Varšavské smlouvy v roce 1968. Abych podchytil změny zapříčiněné zmiňovanou změnou sociálních reálií, vycházím z dat nikoliv reflektujících samotný intervenční zásah, ale z fotografií ilustrujících společenský a politický život před a po této události. Tedy počátek šedesátých let, kdy dochází k jisté emancipaci české společnosti od totalitních praktik let padesátých a jako kontrastí entitu používám zdroje z počátku let sedmdesátých, kdy dochází k postupnému uklidnění postintervenčních poměrů a nastupuje tzv. normalizace, charakterizovaná populačním boomem, známým v pozdějších letech jako "Husákovy děti". Výzkum principiálně vychází ze sémiotické a diskurzivní analýzy a je doplněn obsahovou analýzou pro účely komparace obou období.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the ways through which the social development in the Czech Republic at the turn of 1960s and 1970s is reflected in photographs that were published in the press of that time. Within the social development, there is primarily examined the change of social climate which took place in connection with the military intervention carried out by the Warsaw Pact armies in 1968. In order to capture the changes caused by the indicated changeover in social settings, as a basis I have used not the data reflecting the intervention as such but the photographs which illustrate the social and political life before and after this event. This means the start of 1960s, hence the period when the Czech society experienced certain emancipation from the totalitarian practices of 1950s, and as a contrasting entity, I have applied the sources from the early 1970s when the post-intervention situation gradually subsided and there arrived the so-called "normalisation" which was characterised by the growth of population later referred as the "Husak´s children". The research is principally based on the semiotic and discourse analyses, and for the purpose of comparing both the periods it is supplemented with the content analysis.
