Politicians' COVID discourse on social media: comparative discourse analysis of tweets by Donald Trump and Joe Biden

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the critical discourse analysis of the Twitter posts written by Donald J. Trump and Joseph R. Biden on topics relevant to the Coronavirus pandemic. The aim of this work is to focus on the persuasive and manipulative strategies used, the construction of the authors and the audience, the types of speech acts, and other relevant linguistic elements occurring in the analysed corpus. The method employed here is based on the critical discourse analysis approach of Norman Fairclough. The results confirm that the linguistic choices made were affected by the concurrent presidential election, the approach of the o governmental restrictions, vaccination, political affiliation, and aversion between the authors. Persuasion techniques and the purpose of their use on the audience were identified, as well as the position of power hidden behind the linguistic devices expressing equal stand the authors take to their audiences.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá kritickou diskurzivní analýzou twitterových příspěvků Donalda J. Trumpa a Josepha R. Bidena na témata spojená s koronavirovou pandemií. Cílem této práce je zaměřit se na persvazivní a manipulativní strategie, pozici autorů vůči publiku, typy řečových aktů a další relevantní jazykové prostředky vyskytující se v analyzovaném korpusu. To vše na základě metodiky vycházející z kritické diskurzivní analýzy Normana Fairclougha. Analýza ukazuje vliv prezidentských voleb, postoje k vládním koronavirovým opatřením, očkování, politické příslušnosti a rivality mezi autory na volbu jazykových prostředků. Autoři vůči publiku užívají persvaze, a zaujímají mocenskou pozici skrytou za jazykovými prostředky vyjadřujícími rovnost.
