Analysis of heat waves in Brno

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá analýzou výskytu horkých vln na území Brna od šedesátých let minulého století do současnosti. Vývoj horkých vln od počátku období je analyzován základními statistickými charakteristikami řady dat z profesionální stanice Brno-Tuřany, prostorová variabilita je analyzována na základě porovnání základních statistických charakteristik maximálních teplot vzduchu z vybraných stanic účelové sítě. Charakteristiky horkých vln jsou porovnávány s proměnnými, které by mohly být vysvětlující pro jejich prostorové rozložení. Za studované období (1961–2018) byl zjištěn nárůst počtu horkých vln a nárůst délky horkých vln, který byl statisticky významný ale pouze na několika stanicích. Dále dochází k růstu intenzity horkých vln, nicméně tento nárůst nebyl statisticky významný na všech zkoumaných stanicích. Bylo zjištěno, že na intenzitu horké vlny a na počet horkých vln v roce má vliv hustota městské zástavby spíše než množství vegetace a nadmořská výška. Tyto proměnné ovlivňuje i podíl zastínění oblohy v místě stanice. V diskusi jsou zjištěné výsledky konfrontovány s predikovanými změnami výskytu horkých vln a vliv horkých vln na lidský organismus v prostředí městského klimatu.

Abstract:

The thesis contains an analysis of occurrence of heat waves on the territory of Brno since the early 1960’s. The heat waves that occurred since the beginning of this period are analysed through basic statistical characteristics of data from a professional weather station at Brno-Tuřany. The spatial variability is analysed by a comparison of the basic statistical characteristics of maximal temperatures at specific weather stations of the dedicated network. The heat waves’ characteristics are tested in relation to the variables that could be relevant due to their spatial distribution. It has been found that the number of heat waves had been increasing during the research period (1961-2018), however this escalation was statistically significant only on a few stations. Further, the severity of the heat waves has been intensifying as well, its build-up however wasn’t statistically significant at all researched stations. It has been found that the severity of heat waves and its number is affected by the density of urban development rather than by the amount of vegetation and altitude. These variables have been further affected by the extent of sky shading at the station’s location. In discussion, the results are confronted with predicted heat wave changes and their effects on human organism in the city climate environment.
