Moral distress in project Patron volunteers

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá morálním distresem u dobrovolníků v sociálně-inkluzivním projektu Patron. Ústředními tématy jsou výskyt a původ morálního distresu u cílové skupiny. Dále práce prozkoumává téma copingových strategií a jejich účinnost při vyrovnávání se s morálním distresem. Teoretický oddíl přibližuje koncept morálního distresu, shrnuje poznatky o copingu, se zvláštním přihlédnutím k cílové skupině. Dále pojednává o prostředí projektu Patron. Empirická část práce mapuje etiologii morálního distresu u dobrovolníků v projektu (patronů) a identifikuje některé faktory, které na něj mají vliv. Dále zjišťuje efektivitu užívání různých copingových strategií při snižování míry morálního distresu. Studie byla provedena metodou online dotazníkového šetření. Využit byl přeložený dotazník Brief COPE a modifikovaný a přeložený Dotazník morálního distresu pro patrony. Výsledky potvrzují výskyt morálního distresu, hlavně institucionálního původu, celkově v menší míře, než u dříve zkoumaných profesně definovaných skupin. U cílové skupiny byla také zjištěna menší míra využívání alkoholu a jiných látek ke copingu, spolu s častým užíváním strategií zaměřených na problém.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with moral distress in volunteers in a social-inclusion project Patron. Central themes include presence and origin of moral distress in the group. The thesis also explores the role of coping strategies in dealing with it. The theoretical part is focused on moral distress and coping while taking the specifics of volunteers in the Project (patrons) into account. Furthermore, the inner-workings of the Project are examined more closely. Empirical part of the study aims to map the etiology of moral distress in patrons and to identify possible factors influencing it. Additionaly, the effect of using different coping strategies to lower the rate of moral distress is studied. In the current study, two different online questionnaires were used, Brief COPE and the Moral distress questionnaire for patrons, both were translated, the latter was a modification of an existing method. The study confirmed presence of moral distress in patrons, mainly of an institutional origin, although in a lesser extent than in proffesionally defined groups. Also, there was a lesser inclination towards using substances to cope and a higher one towards using problem focused strategies in patrons than expected.
