Sociophonology of Received Pronunciation: Native and Non-Native Environments

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá spisovnou výslovností anglického jazyka (tzv. Received Pronunciation) a její percepcí anglickými (tj. rodilými) a českými (nerodilými) mluvčími. Dále zkoumá role, které výslovnostní model plní v obou prostředích. V úvodní části práce předkládá diachronní i synchronní teoretický rámec, který vychází z množství současné i historické odborné literatury a který analyzuje Received Pronunciation pomocí sociolingvistických pojmů, především z oblasti jazykové preskripce a standardizace. Tato část také představuje výslovnostní model vytvořený Clivem Uptonem pro potřeby Oxford University Press; tento model v některých významných jednotlivostech inovuje model tradiční, který je doposud platný především v prostředí, kde se angličtina vyučuje coby cizí jazyk. Teoretická část také analyzuje regionální změny, které jsou často jak v populární, tak i v odborné literatuře vysvětlovány jako změny způsobené Received Pronunciation, případně jihovýchodní varietou, známou jako Estuary English (s velkým vlivem Londýna coby kulturního, ekonomického a administrativního centra země). Takováto vysvětlení jsou ovšem do značné míry simplicistní, poněvadž ony změny se zdají být důsledkem především vnitřního vývoje regionálních dialektů, jejich fonologického uspořádání a změnami v percepci prestiže u jednotlivých jevů. Praktická část je tvořena výzkumem, který je proveden pomocí internetové stránky s 18 nahrávkami a doplňujícím dotazníkem. Tyto nahrávky jsou evaluovány 20 anglickými a 20 českými respondenty. Obzvláštní pozornost je věnována pěti předem vybraným jevům, které jsou v různé míře zastoupeny v nahrávkách. Výzkum se dále zabývá sociolingvistickými kategoriemi, které pomáhají vytvořit ideový konstrukt spisovnosti. Výsledky ukazují, že existují významné rozdíly mezi rodilými a nerodilými respondenty. Rodilí mluvčí díky vrozené intuici a vyšší míře sensitivity připouští varianty, které jsou v nerodilém prostředí stále do jisté míry stigmatisovány. Zároveň přistupují ke studovaným jevům v relativních hodnotách, kdežto nerodilí mluvčí mají tendenci hodnotit jevy v hodnotách absolutních. Výsledky dále potvrzují, že není vhodné vnímat Received Pronunciation jako jeden monolitický nelokalizovatelný standard, neboť existují významné rozdíly mezi rodilými respondenty ze severní a jižní části Anglie. Zdá se tak mnohem vhodnější rozdělit výslovnostní standard na severní a jižní varietu. Výsledky výzkumu dále poukazují na skutečnost, že je nutné v alespoň některých bodech aktualizovat výslovnostní model, který je předkládán v zemích, kde anglický jazyk není jazykem mateřským.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with Received Pronunciation (RP), the prestige accent in England and, to a lesser extent, in the other parts of Great Britain. It examines the perception of this accent by English (i.e. a native) and Czech (non-native) respondents. Furthermore, the dissertation also analyses the roles RP fulfils in the two environments. The first part of the dissertation provides both synchronic and diachronic theoretical frame that is inspired by a wealth of both up-to-date as well as historical literature. Also, it analyses RP by means of sociolinguistic notions, especially related to language prescription and standardisation. This part introduces the updated model of RP created by Clive Upton for Oxford University Press—this model innovates the traditional model of RP, which has been in use particularly in the world of ELT and which is often fondly adhered to even in the native environment. The theoretical part also analyses changes in regional accents of English, which are often presented (both in lay as well as academic literature) as changes directly brought about by the influence of RP/Estuary English/Cockney. Such views, however, turn out to be rather simplistic, since the changes are often connected with the inner phonological structure of the accents and social values attendant upon individual variables. The practical part consists of a survey that has been made by means of a website with 18 recordings and an accompanying questionnaire. The recordings have been evaluated by 20 Czech and 20 English respondents. The survey focuses on five pre-selected variables: the glottal stop, intrusive /r/, FOOT/GOOSE fronting, short BATH vowel, and lowered TRAP vowel. The survey also attempts to establish the sociolinguistic categories most closely linked with the mental construct of RP. The research results reveal significant differences between native and non-native respondents. The former, thanks to their innate intuition and a higher amount of sensitivity, tolerate more variability within the prestige accent. They accept some variants that are still rather stigmatised in the non-native environment. Moreover, their attitude towards the studied variables is relative (more or less) whereas non-native respondents tend to view the variables as absolutes (either/or). The results also suggest that it is hardly possible to view RP as a monolithic non-localisable due to the acceptance of short BATH [], the presence of which makes it necessary to accept two equal varieties of RP, namely southern and northern RP. Lastly, the results confirm the necessity to update at least some features of the model in the non-native environment.
